first coffee from the super jolly this morning.  Why didnt someone convince me to buy this a long time ago.  Amazing!  It brings out so much more flavours, and they are so clear and well defined.  It has just made my ethiopian gambella sundried go from ok to REALLY good - I think I am going to have to retry all my different coffees now and re-evaluate them.

    Good stuff Damian,

Welcome to the great grinder club. The CS mentra of the best grinder you can possibly afford has been proven again.

Even moreso than in machines, you really do gets what you pays for in a grinder.

    Enjoy!

Stephen Morrissey has, presumably, a timer on the grinder. That means hes grinding the correct amount of coffee into the doser and then thwacking it out into the pf.

The segments in the dosing star are next to useless for people who care IMO(in regards to dose). Anyway, those segments are only filled up really when the doser is kinda fullish, which is rare if youre grinding on demand at home.

People often thwack, thwack, thwack away to break up any clumps.

Dose is controlled, (or limited - not necessarily in control) but the one doin the thwacking - the barista and their particular dosing technique - usually.

Thats what I was trying to get to -

I have never used a doser grinder before, so have no idea how they work, but assume that each segment of the doser chamber contains a certain amount of coffee which is filled up (have seen variable from 5 - 9g per dose), but how does it control how many beans get ground into the PF if each thwack of the thwacker opens up one of the segments?

I read constantly about getting the dose right (by weight or volume depends I guess), and yet when watching google vids, people seem to thwack merrily away on their grinders, so how is the dose controlled?

Even in the "general coffee" thread, there is one on the Irish Barista Champ, who has no distribution technique, but merrily thwacks away on the grinder. I was told it was a "timed" dose rather than by volume, so I am just confused.

Hi Senator - havent ever tried, but I gather the timer is more for filling the doser than accurately measuring single shot.

The full crank on the timer is 30 seconds from memory.... or was it 60 seconds... no 30 sounds right....hmm Ill check later

How accurate is (or can be) the timer on the mazzers?

IE does a 20 sec grind = a 14g double or is it more hit and miss?

    Cheers

I now have my new black super jolly - thanks Chris (talk coffee). I was getting reaady to have a play, but was then told it had to stay in the box til christmas!!! I at least got to open the box and check it was actually a grinder in there. I saw it has a counter on it which is cool - my mum can check up on me, and confirm I am drinking too much coffee. Im also glad I went for the small hopper, because the original one looks massive when you get it home.

Thanks all for your help. I think I understand how each work now. It sounds like either will be fine. I am favouring an auto at this stage. I will try it as is, and if the auto annoys me I will do the mods if I am sure I wont stuff anything up!

The auto is nice if a huge number of people show up for a party and are big coffee drinkers or you are grinding for a bag to give to someone without a decent grinder.

I grind on demand with my SJ with the auto fill feature still all in place...no problems and always manage to get very close to what I need and if short a very quick touch gets me the last little bit.

    Cheers

I dont see the need for 2 On positions.
    Someone please explain.
On Mazzer auto-fills, the grinder only starts if there is no / not enough coffee in the doser AND the doser leaver has been pulled 12 (?) times. The 2nd switch possition is a momentary possition, ie the switch springs back to possition 1. This is used when you want the grinder to start but dont want to have to pull the doser leaver repeatedly to get it started.

Slightly more complicated than other systems, though I guess if you were using as intended it would mean the ground coffee is a fraction fresher than if the grinder started as soon as the flap lowered due to the fact that the doser would be near empty by the time the grinder starts again.

    Cheers,

    Michael

I have the auto-fill version, but have removed the cut-out switch and flap to allow access to the shute for cleaning.

It is an easy job to remove the cut-out switch, but you do then need to bridge the contacts to the switch in the base of the unit ... if you bridge correctly, the 3-position switch will function as follows:
    position 0 = off
    position 1 = on / run
position 2 = momentary "start" switch......ie turn switch from position 0 to 1 (nothing happens), then turn switch to 2 , motor will start and switch returns to position 1 and motor runs....when you are done grinding, turn switch to position 0 (off)
    Other models may vary ...
    cheers,

My Gino Rossi has the auto-fill flap.
    The power switch is On/Off.

If the doser is empty and you leave the switch on, it keeps grinding until the auto-fill flap switch turns it off.

If you only want to grind as you go you simply switch on and off as you would with a grinder without the auto-fill.

I dont see the need for 2 On positions.
    Someone please explain.
