  • Rancilio Grinder Setting With Doser

    Hi

Have just got a new rancilio grinder with doser for xmas - and noticed that I have to set the setting at 4 or 5 to get a decent grind for my coffee. Is that normal or is it because I am using certain beans? On my previous grinder the Iberital Challenge - I never had to set it right to the end!

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi eugeh,

Grind setting will depend mostly on your dose and freshness of your beans. We normally end up in the 10 to 15 range.

Do a search on this site about finding the true zero on the grinder. You might find your true zero is at -4 or so. There will also be tips on how to change it so that you get your true zero in positive figures. True zero for me is where the burrs just touch and you can hear the burrs touching slightly when you hit the grind button. Just to give you an idea, my true zero is at 3 and Im grinding beans (depending on type of beans) between 10 and 14.

Re: Rancilio Grinder Setting With Doser

I have a Rocky D/L and I believe that my true zero is at 3. I bought it new and its about 5 months old.

My problem is that I need to set it to grind at 4 or 5 to get a good extraction on my silvia. What is going on?

I did have to take the hopper off one day to clean it and "fix" the push button pin so it works properly - so when I grind
the hopper doesnt undo itself (spin to more coarser settings) it was very annoying..

I think I put the top burr properly the way it was.. and I thought everything was OK.

Any ideas why I need to grind so close to the zero point guys???

        Thanks

Hi eugeh, I have a Rocky and have my setting around the 2/3 mark and for some beans even finer, every grinder has a different zero point which is adjustable, you will find where your zone is once you use it a while. I have just modded mine so that it is stepless, I am now able to adjust it very finely between notches.

Firstly, how do you know your true zero is at 3? Secondly, what is your dosing like on the silvia? Could you have been putting too little coffee in your basket? I know they say a double shot should have 14g of coffee, but if you use 14g in your silvia double basket, youre going to get wet pucks and poor extraction. Mine was closer to 19g.

            Thanks
