  • Rocky to Mazzer Mini?

What would the advantages be of upgrading from Rocky to a Mazzer Mini, Ive read some reviews on the Mazzer and it sounds great. Would the improvement in grind quality be enough to warrant the extra $400 I would have to spend?
Any pros and cons would be appreciated
Is the doser on the Mazzer messy for domestic use?

    Re: Rocky to Mazzer Mini?

The mazzer mini has a great doser - sweeps clean and as long as youre careful with your "thwacking" (definitely not the technical term ...) its clean enough.

The $400 issue is a tougher question to answer. I think its easier to justify if youre more experienced with grinder adjustments and want to extract the last tenths out of an extraction - the Rocky with its steps can be a little easier to setup but of course doesnt allow the fineness of adjustment. The difference is probably more pronounced if youre a long black or espresso drinker and then even more so if you have an espresso machine that can get the best out of the grind (e61 group head, pre-infusion ...).

A taste test would be the only way to be sure whether its worth $400 to you.

Ive done the teflon tape and splastic tubing stepless mod to Rocky and have been able to get finer adjustments. Have PID Silvia and have been pulling some great shots, but one is always striving for more....thus do I need a better grinder?? The bane of being a Coffeesnob!!!

I went from a fully tweaked Rocky to a Macap M4D, and the Macap is staying, partnered with my VBM. Of course "YMMV--Your Mileage May Vary".

I also had done the teflon tape and tube mods to my rocky with good results. I then upgraded to a Mazzer SJ and now have better results. For some reason the Mazzer grind seems more forgiving and my shot consistency and control is much better than what I had with the rocky. (after a week of getting used to the doser anyway)

I think there is no substitute for grind consistency and grinders like the various Mazzers, Macaps, Compaks and any of the high quality commercials out there, all deliver on this essential requirement.

                Re: Rocky to Mazzer Mini?

Yep - agree with all that. The Rocky modded is very nice, but especially with my commercial, the Mazzer is more forgiving and smoother in the cup - and more consistent from shot to shot.

                Cheers

PS. As Mal says, its not restricted to Mazzer though - lots of good commercial grinders out there so do the research.

I think too many people overlook the grinder. A friend has recently upgraded a Rocky to a Mazzer SJ and cant believe the difference. I would love to upgrade my SJ to a K10 at home. I would skip the mini and go straight for a SJ or SJ clone. You can pick up a clone like the Plus G3 for mazzer mini prices. It isnt built as tough as the Mazzer (maybe) but at home you will never know the difference. Its a massive step up from a mini anyway.

Another vote for Mazzer/Macap end of the scale.

After (falsely) believing the burrs in my Isomac Granmacinino were stuffed, I bought a Rocky DL and it honesty wasnt a whole lot better. In retrospect, its on a par. (FWIW, the Granmacinino now lives on at my parents house powering their Isomac Mondiale, and is still working very well - and doesnt clump, either!)

The M4D took a while to tune in but once done it removes some of the variability from coffee-making. Dose is accurate and grind is also very accurate.

Might be worth having a look at this:

Oh yeah, I do own a Mazzer Mini which i bought from Talk Coffee (site sponsor) and I love it.

I have done this mod which was simple and worked really well and makes it much cleaner.

greenman, as good as the Rocky is, the Mazzer is better! I noticed an instant difference when I went from one to the other. I have zero regrets. I too bought mine from Chris at Talk Coffee.

Greenman - I have a SJ and live in the same town so we could organise a side by side comparison - rocky v SJ - if you are keen?
