    My First post..

    Well,

I recieved a new EM0480 grinder to go with my 6910 for Christmas.
I took it out of the box, Great! beautiful and shiny.

Got some fresh beans and ground them into the portafilter, they looked ok (had the grind on about 13). But when i brewed the espresso, no coffee came out. :-? I made the grind a bit coarser until i eventually found out that there was no difference in the grind no matter how course i went on the dial. I cleaned the grinder thoroughly, and assembled it again. Aha! the grind was coarser. But it wont go any finer now!

Should this be happening with a brand new one? Im planning on calling sunbeam tomorrow but thought Id see what people have to say here first.

    Thanks for any help!

sounds like the top burr carrier isnt being seated properly.

Twist the collar around (coarser) until it wont go any further, then press the button on the back and keep twisting until the arrow on the burr carrier lines up with the arrow at the back of the grinder. This should enable you to take the collar assembly off altogether.

Now take out the top burrs (there should be a small metal handle on the burr carrier that you can use to twist the burrs) by turning them and pulling at the same time.

Now, place the collar back on the machine so that the arrows line up again. Next place the burrs in the collar and then rotate with gentle downward pressure, they should then fall into place. Do not continue to try and turn the burrs. On a new machine, there should be arrows / marks on both the burr carrier and the collar that line up when the burrs have slotted in correctly. Now turn the entire collar back round. This should have the burrs seated correctly into position. You should be able to look into the top of the burr assembly and see the gap between the top and bottom burrs widen / shrink as you make the grind coarser / finer. The movement wont be much each click, but a few clicks should make a visible difference.

Some other possibilities / thoughts -

Are they fresh beans (from a local roaster, not the supermarket)? If from a supermarket, they will not be fresh and you will struggle to get any sort of decent espresso shot and / or consistency of grind.

How much coffee do you have in the hopper. The 480 likes to be roughtly 1/2 full of beans to provide adequate downward pressure on the beans as they pass through the burrs.

Is your dosing / tamping routine the same for each grind? When trying to get a decent shot, and something goes wrong, only change 1 thing (usually the grind), keep the dose (amount of coffee) and the tamp (pressure) as close to the same each time as you can.
Are you getting the same level on the 6910 tamper each time (1/2 of the steel above the rim of the basket).
Have you taken out the pressurised filters from the PF and using the standard filters?

The pair of the 6910 / 480 is capable of making wonderful coffee when paired with a little knowldge, a lot of passion and (some say) most importantly FRESH BEANS

      Hi Senator,

Thanks for your help. Did everything you said and gave it a jolly good clean, but still not changing the grind

Oh well, Guess its a call to Sunbeam soon....

wow, this is the 2nd one of these in as many days (another thread 6910 / 480 help). I wonder if Sunbeams QC went a little laxed rushing out all the "free" grinders recently

              Re: EM0480 Help

The other thing you can try is removing the collar (as per above) and then remove the bottom burrs (using a spanner, turn the nut on the top of the burrs clockwise to loosen it - you will need to wedge something around the burr to stop it turning).

Remove the burrs, under these there should be some washers. Remove 1, then replace the lower burr and put the nut back on and reassemble as per above.

Try again, it could be that the burr was sitting too high to begin with (too many spacers). My machine used to grind around 18 - 23 depending on bean age and volume of beans in the hopper. After removing 1 washer, it now grinds around 15 and is pretty consistent at that setting.

Here is a calibration guide from Sunbeam showing Senators suggestions:

But as its brand new, I think youd be better to return it for replacement.

                  Re: EM0480 Help

Hi, FYI I received my grinder by redemption just before Christmas and tried it the other day and got the same results.

Very fine grind for a short while would come out (only about 1/20th of required amount), then the it would not come out, and at opening the unit all the coffee would be compressed in the unit/grooves. No idea whats going on..

To me, all the coffee needs to do is fall through but it fails this, also setting the grinder to 20 changes nothing, so likely the exact problem as original poster.

I tried opening / cleaning and reseating things also, but same results in the end. I will also call sunbeam.

                  Adam

*Update* when removing bottom burr, I only have 1 spacer washer under the burr, is this about correct?

**Update*Update** After replacing everything and leaving the grinder on the maximum setting (eg a little past 20 [it still clicks past 20]) I managed to get a grind through OK, it was actually quite fine the grind even on 20...

I also noticed that the hopper doors were not opening cleanly all the time (perhaps coffee in them) so this is something else to be sure of.

                      Re: EM0480 Help

The hopper door thing is not unusual. I had three machines and all had quirky apertures - but it didnt affect the flow. In your case, sounds like something more serious.

                        Re: EM0480 Help

Well it seems i too am having the same problem with the grinder i received as a bonus with my 6910. its coarse all the way from 0 to 20. It does get finer towards 0, but not fine enough.

i got a couple of washers from Sunbeam and added both, but it made no real difference.

as i received it as part of the bonus offer, would it be covered by warranty? i dont have a receipt for it...

cant work it out, and am wasting a lot of coffee. :-(

might need to call them again to sort this out...

                          Re: EM0480 Help

                          Call them.
It should be under warranty and make sure you tell them how much coffee you are wasting.
If it were me Id be asking for a free seal to make up for your wasted coffee.
You are going to need it eventually.

Be subtle though, dont ask for it outright, work your way around to it.

its really sounding like there was a batch of dud grinders with so many problems reported around this time.

Nothing takes the shine of a new xmas pressy like the dissapointment of it not bloody working properly..............

I got mine (for my birthday) about 3 weeks ago.  No problems at all.  8-)

We were buying freshly roasted beans from a local roaster but, without a grinder of our own, had to get him to grind them.  I know this isnt a top line grinder, but we are loving it.
