just waiting to empty the hopper a little more (classic procrastination at work).
It has a self closing gate.
If you take it off therell only be beans left around the burrs.

Anyhow I stocked up yesterday with three 4mm, three 6mm and three 8mm washers in preparation for battle with the 450. After 5 minutes all going well, top burr removed, collar removed and bottom burr removed (clockwise is the key)...... then we hit a dilemma, spacer is 7mm > not the most common washer size around!

So currently the grinder is disassembled and awaiting my trip to the local hardware store to find a 7mm spacer.

After all the rant though the EM0450 is very easy to disassemble and poke around in or mod, a definite plus for the machine.

Well I didnt manage to get around to opening up the EM0450 on the weekend but on the finest setting (1) I did manage to sort out my grind a little better.  I think AM has a valid point, a little settling of the burrs has happened and Im expecting the washer to fix the problem, just waiting to empty the hopper a little more (classic procrastination at work).

I just drink more coffee :-)

Also try not to leave beans in for more than an hr o two... We always just add the amount we need.

Otherwise they will go stale and you will have to grind finer to get any thing from them.

I have a couple of friends who want a cheapish grinder that will actually work, and the 450/480 used to be a easy recommendation.

Is everybody having these sorts of issues? or at least enough to change the recommendation? What options are there around the $150 mark?

At around $150...  You got no other choices...

    1: EM0480 or EM0450  as entry level
    2: Base level Rocky
3: The best you can get $ may well = the $ of the coffee machine

Over all there has been few if any real problems with the Sunbeam grinders...  ( Bite people bite).

That is not to say; that they do not have a very interesting, but easily fixed QA problem ? ...

What I tend to see, is that some are great and stable, while others take a little while to bed in...

That is, that while teh burrs are metal and of reasonable quality (@ this price range) they are mounted in a grinder that is in all sense - plastic (they all are at this $$$).  Thus depending on who was setting up / testing / adjusting....  It is not uncommon to find that as the burrs settle, the grind settings are then out of wack.

Fix...  A washer or two under teh bottom burr - Sb supply or make ya own.   A 5 min job for some people, for others; any repair is a return under warranty and a big Whoo Harr...

Of the 4 I have adjusted and have used  etc (One at work gets a thrashing) once adjusted and bedded in...  Not a problem...

Oh... Except for when people might try to clean and put things in back to font or just stuff up big time...  However that is a PEBKAC issue not teh machine...

Now two users have moved on to Rocky grinders and it is strange that they  both say they likes the EM0480 better and felt that they could get a better grind and finer...

I seem to be having a similar problem to some of you guys. My sunbeam EM0450 started out well with pours ranging from 20 to 30 sec on setting 12 using espresso wow beans from this site, have changed to sulawesi beans from this site and having a 10 sec pour even when I set the grinder on 2. My dosing and tamping remain standard.

Thanks carriek for the instructions, Ill be checking the washer setup this weekend and hopefully back to a 30sec pour.

    Hi there!! Great site guys!

The "burr shield" that sits the hopper of my EMO480 has broken off. Should I get a replacement or does it not matter??

What an awesome site!! Big thank you to the organisers!!

Am also experiencing an overly coarse grind from my EM0480 - even on 1st notch. Sunbeam have suggested I try ramping the setting right up to 20 and trying again as there was a batch of grinders that had a calibration issue. I tried this and got a hideously coarse grind which poured way too quickly. Sunbeam said if that didnt work to ring back and get a washer kit...guess what I am up to tomorrow? Will report back how I get on...

I still love the EM6910 and the grinder, regardless of issues - best coffee I have ever made.  Also I cant recommend coffee alchemy enough - a friend put me onto them - small roaster in Enmore. They roast to order and send out the best blends I have ever tasted!

    Re: EM0480 Help

I have Gaggia Classic /EM0480 Grinder for 11 months. Apart from a few teething problems  all fine until about three days ago. Initially following usual grinding and tamping procedures the flow was very dark and fine and extremely slow. I checked shower screen and holding plate on Gaggia and they were fine. I cleaned Grinder top and bottom burrs and noticed no spacers or washers below bottom burr although didnt seem a problem in the past 11 months. Now after cleaning the Grinder the grind  seems much coarser (some chaff like particles) - Have tried a number of different settings but now the flow is like a tap(coffee horrible) wheras the tamping technique hasnt
changed. I am sure the burrs have been reassembled correctly. As the Grinder warranty runs out end of next month I have sent Grinder in for service.  It will be away for 7/10days.

However I would appreciate anyones comments on why the flow would go from a a thick dark dribble to a water like consistency from just cleaning the Grinder. I dont think it is the Gaggia - it must be something out of line or broken on the grinder ??

    What are your thoughts ?

    Thank you
    Les

    Re: EM0480 Help

    Have you cleaned the grinder?

Take it all apart and use a dry brush to get all the gunk out. I find that it doesnt take long for a layer of coffee dust to get caked on to the bottom of the upper burr, this may have an effect.

Other things that can effect it also is the volume of beans in the hopper. The 480 does not like the "just enough per cup" method (popcorns terribly and retains too much in the grind chamber). When my 480 was grinding in the range that you have (17ish), it was very changeable like you describe with the coarsness varied depending on the volume of beans in the hopper (less beans meant coarser grind required), age etc with the grind required going anywhere from 17 - 22/23). When I remved 1 of the washers to get the grind range around the 14 - 16 mark it is much more stable and only required a click either way periodically or when going from the double shot to the single shot filter.

    Re: EM0480 Help

I seem to have the inverse happening..  When I first got my 480 I had to set it on about 17 or so to get a good pour.  now, (six months later), I find I am continually adjusting higher to maintain a decent pour.

I am using beans from the same source and a spring loaded tamper for consistency...  I have taken the upper burr out to check for any sign of mis-alignment, etc.. withno luck.

What would be causing me to have to always increase the grind size?

    Thanks!

    Re: EM0480 Help

I just got an em0480 a week ago from harvey norman in nz.
I had the same issue with the grind being way too coarse. I rang sunbeam and they sent me the washer kit. I undid my grinder to find that there were NO washers in there at all!! (isnt there supposed to be at least 1 or 2??)

I put the 2 in from the kit. Now im happily grinding away for espresso machine on the 12th click setting. Even after this drama I still think em0480 is cool, and I am getting good results.

I got mine (for my birthday) about 3 weeks ago.  No problems at all.  8-)

We were buying freshly roasted beans from a local roaster but, without a grinder of our own, had to get him to grind them.  I know this isnt a top line grinder, but we are loving it.
