  • Which Grinder?

    hahahaha

Thundergod put it on your birthday wish list

Now i am seriously trying to work out what to do about a grinder!! :-/

I did so well not to use Chriss grinder!! But now to hear my partner go on about THE grinder is sending me into search mode :

Then of course there is the whole argument of doser or doserless :-/

I thought i was a coffee snob for refusing to drink instant coffee over the last 7 years or so.... this new discovery has my head spinning ;D

I ditched 3 coffees today because the pour was not good! i even ditched the start of the grind!!

To think that only yesterday i was thinking what a waste that was!! ;D ;D

In my opinion a doser gives you more options.

hmmmm but apparently there is a learning curve or knack perhaps to the doser one that can be frustrating?

I suppose i should go and try a few different ones before trying to decide on that aspect of things?

I find doserless ones messy and clumpy.

Thats what I would do and highly recommend this approach
Test drive all available grinders and buy what suits you
TG and I have the same grinder
However they differ as he has a doser model & I have the doserless

Choose a grinder what is right for you but dont skimp on quality

The one you have is the one my partner was using and loved!!

I agree with you not skimping on quality i could see the difference in the grinder he was using and ours just by looking at his grind

Not only did his grind look better but his results were quicker and the results in the cup were better too!!

              Re: Which Grinder?

I splurged and went for the M4D micrometric in chrome and it is built like a tank and grinds beautifully.

All M4s are, I would presume, the same quality.

With a small custom hopper it fits neatly in the kitchen too, and since you have your partner on side it sounds like a done deal.

                Re: Which Grinder?

Yes it would certainly be a splurge.

Not to mention we have the Iberital that is only about 3 weeks old to sell then, not sure how hard that would be, there is already one for sale on the for sale section.

but i guess it would be a lasting splurge and i agree it would fit nicely in a kitchen

Mine fits nicely even with the tall hopper.

As you vary the grind size.... you can do it in steps (changed by a finite amount each time..... hopefully small - but not with some cheap grinders). You could be caught with an ideal grind size between two adjacent steps.... not ideal.

Stepless is "without steps"..... so you can adjust the grind size as little or as much as you want.

                        Re: Which Grinder?

JavaB so the one i have the Iberital doserless that has the knob on the side that you have to twist and twist a fair few times to make a change in it is considered a what???

would the Macap M4D one be considered a stepless? where the thing on top could be changed a small amount and was more accurate in the change in grind??

Does that make sense? or am i totally confused??

                          Re: Which Grinder?

Yep, a grinder where you rotate a know to vary the grind size is stepless.....

The upside is you can adjust the grind as finely as you like....
The downside is if you want to change from plunger grind to espresso.... you need LOTS of turns....

A stepped grinder on the other hand is quickly turned to one if its pre-set steps.... and as long as these are close together.... they are generally capable of sufficiently fine adjustment (always the case with expensive stepped grinders)...

The M4D is also stepless..... but uses a different locking method... (not the worm drive like the Iberital)..... which is better?..... well depends how finely you want your adjustment.... and how often you want to make massive changes..... I like the Iberital worm drive - espresso only - and thats what I have on my DRM flat/conical commercial grinder.

Just a quick note of clarification here. Oongas partner trained on a silver stepped version of the M4D. These are pretty scarce these days as most people prefer the bling of the chrome micrometric version. In this grinder, I actually like the stepped version more

                              Re: Which Grinder?

i am so very unsure of how far to go with my knob lol
i was turning it a small amount and it was not making any difference
i have since realised i have to turn it like 1 or 2 full turns to make much difference

but just then i found the grind was too fine so i wanted to make it coarser and i only turned it a little bit, and it made no difference. I was scared to use the coffee because i dont have that much left and it doesnt seem like the payment will clear to get my coffee from beanbay LOL

actually might be a good idea to get some supermarket beans to waste on working out how much i need to twist to get different grinds LOL

                              Thanks for all that information
