Re: Rust on new burrs?!!
Hi Pavoniboy I work with steel everyday, all you need to do is use a wire brush and run some beans through your grinder, a little rust never hurt anyone.

Id go the beans route,Originally posted by 49786F7677707B7660190 link=1234229851/7#7 date=1234334788Thanks all. I havent touched them yet.
Although the electrolysis seems like a good way to do it, I am thinking from the other posts to just run some not so great beans through them to hopefully dislodge most? some? of the rust and get some oils building up. Hopefully it wont taint my coffee noticeably after that.
AM - yes I have drank much tank water, I guess I was more worried about anything that might alter the taste? Possibly too paranoid about my coffee?
If beans are abrasive enough to wear burrs down, the rust should be no problem unless their massively corroded- in which case they should be returned or turfed

Re: Rust on new burrs?!!
Gday All,
I wouldnt use any kind of acid etching method to remove rust from a cutting tool, which the burr-plates of a grinder actually are. You will run the risk of removing a small amount of parent material from the cutting edges of the burr at the same time, so while your new burrs will look all nice and shiny, they wont be as sharp as they were either.
Far better to use a simple electrolytic bath as this will only remove the oxide (rust) and leave the parent metal alone. Heres a link to a guide on how to go about doing it... http://www.htpaa.org.au/article-electro.php Its very simple really and very safe. The same can not be said for all the various so-called "rust-removers" out there as a large proportion of them use a small percentage of Hydrofluoric Acid which is a very hazardous substance.
All the best
Mal.

Re: Rust on new burrs?!!
I had some rust stains on some new burrs I put on my Cimbali. I brushed them off with a plastic brush, ran some beans through the grinder, lubed them up with coffee oils and checked them again not long ago and they were still shiny. I wouldnt put any acid on it at all, weak or otherwise. If you have to wet them at all make sure you dry em RIGHT AWAY. it wont take long for it to rust up again otherwise.
I tested it on the old ones. Cleaned them up, let them drip dry, a few days later rust formed.

Re: Rust on new burrs?!!
My old many often uses a week solution for cleaning... But you have to be careful...Originally posted by 6B7D7878696B676E6E6D6D080 link=1234229851/3#3 date=1234257711My instinct tells me that using acid may not be such a good idea pb. Despite rinsing, I have a feeling the long term effects could be worse?
My thoughts arent based on any hard evidence...just some niggling warning, warning in the old memory banks.
Perhaps there are some metallurgists amongst us?
Why bother ???
A good kitchen scotch brite and or toothpaste and a tooth brush... What is a bit of rust... You never drank tank water ???
Besides, once the beans start going through... It will be clean as any other used grinder...

Re: Rust on new burrs?!!
Thanks KK.
Dont believe they are pitted, just surface rust so will try the acid toilet cleaner.

Re: Rust on new burrs?!!
If they are pitted then yes return them
If it is only rust dust it can easily removed with an acid based toilet cleaner applied with a brush and rinsed off
Or if you have a rust cleaner liquid it is a little stronger but works the same apply with brush and rinse off

Rust on new burrs?!!
Hi,
I have just received a set of new replacement burrs for a Fiorenzato Doge 83 flat burr grinder.
They are covered in rust, on both sides. Is this normal/okay?
I know if I use them there will definitely be rust coming through given the amount of rust.
Should I be returning them? Thanks for your help.
