  • Cleaned Rocky and now Zero point is at 10?!?!

    Hi guys
Have had my Rocky and Silvia since May 2008 and thought today he Rocky would probably well overdue for a clean. It sure was. I was amazed anything actually came out of it!

    Anyhow, something strange has happened.

When I first got it, I adjusted to find the point at which the burrs would be touching (true zero) and that would be about 2 or 3 indicated on the scale on the hopper.

Now after the clean, I reassembled it all, and the burrs are now touching around 10! If I orientate the hopper so it winds back to 0 it wont tighten to the point where the burrs will touch.

Basically it seems the holes the hopper screws into are now about opposite where they should be - by this i mean if you look at this diagram, the screws are going in the holes marked by a "0" but to get the hopper aligned to 0 the screws should be in holes in the brass burr mount in non existant hole location X

    X 0 X

    0 X 0

Do you know what I mean?

    Its all arse-about.

How on earth has this happened?

    How do I fix it?

    Very very confused!

Dont worry about it - as long as you know where your zero point is you can adjust from there.

Have you got the top burr carrier screwed in as firmly as it will go?

@greenman yes the burr carrier is screwed in as tightly as it would go, then backed off a tad, not enough to have made a difference in the alignment I would have thought.

@fringe_dweller yeah well if it still works the same.... I just cant see how it could have changed, its really strange. I cant see how I am putting it back together any differently!

Re: Cleaned Rocky and now Zero point is at 10?!?!

OK I just got around to running some beans through. I set it to about 15 as I had been using about 5 before, and the grind was coarse as. Resulted in a 6 second 60ml pour. I wound it back a bit and got it back to about 10 and got about a 20 second pour if that.

Now when there are no beans in it, you dont hear the burrs touching till about 7 or 8.

Maybe it needs some beans within the burrs to put some load on it or something, and by the time I run some more through (wasting them in the process) it will get my Zero back to 0 or where it was before, and I will go back to being able to grind at 5 or 6?

As it is now its still grinding too coarse.

          This is really strange.

I am having difficulty understanding your description, not to worry, its just me.
When I had Rocky my assembly method was with the lead unplugged screw the top burr carrier in till it just touches i.e. you cant rotate the motor spindle by hand. The hopper should have a stop screw, which hits against a stop the top burr carrier needs to be rotated counterclockwise just enough so when you attach the hopper the stop screw just clears its stop. In other words on assembly if you have wound the carrier to far back the stop screw will hit against the stop but the burr carrier could be a third of a rotation to coarse.
Thats all I can think of.

OK I had another play with the grinder just now. Reassembled the hopper and now yes it turns and stops at 0 but the point at which the burrs start touching is still around 6, which is where I used to grind. I ground some coffee at about 7 or 8 just above the point where you could hear the burrs touching, which resulted in a 16" pour using the dosing and tamping technique that was fine before...

So I guess the question now is why are the teeth of the burrs chattering at the point where I used to grind? They cant be THAT close as the grind is still coming out a little too coarse, hence the 16" pours.

Have you tried some teflon tape on the burrs? It helps tighten them up.

Clutching at straws here but did you remove the grind plates from the carriers?

No I didnt remove the grind plates... So the teflon mod removes slack from the thread? So the thread can be a little loose and cause the carrier to fall on the thread a tad? and the tape takes up that slack? I gather? The thread was a bit full of coffee grind when I took it apart, which I cleaned most of it out, so maybe thats the problem?

Give the teflon tape a try, see how it goes.

The teflon tape can make a huge difference. A friend of mine recently bought a new Rocky so I decided to pull it apart & check it out. The threads were nice & tight but I still managed to sqeeze in one layer of teflon tape. Surprisingly, the zero point did actually change quite dramatically.

                          Evan.

OK thanks guys, I have a little bit of the tape here, I will give it a try in the morning, and will report back soon after

Wow !! The tape seems to have done the trick! Zero/plates touching seems to happen right on 0 or 1, and I ground my beans on setting 3 or 4 and it was a bit slow if anything, so I think its all good now Next on the list is the stepless mod and the mod to the sweeping vanes so it doesnt leave grounds in the corner of the doser....

                              Thanks CS!!
