  • Grinder for Syphon and Drip

Hi all, really finding having to clean out grinds and reset Compak between pulling shots and grinding for Syphon or Auto Drip a time consuming process. In NZ we can pick up the Sunbeam Cafe series relatively cheaply on special $120 NZ, is the grind quality of a good enough level to get the best from the Syphon? or am I best to wait till I can justify a second hand mazzer or similar?

Dont mean to offend anyone I just am not sure how important the grind is for Syphon and Technivorm Drip.

    Cheers

    Chris

Is this to use at work or home seems to me you have one of the best grinders going around.

Both are for home MB, but this can happen daily. Its also quite a bit wasted each time as the Compak holds a lot of coffee in the throat. Cheers, CB

I just put what coffee I need in my mazzer clone and use an icypole stick to remove the grounds from the chute and then brush the grounds from the doser.
I think if you can get the sunbeam em0480 grinder for $120 thats less than half price what they are here, that would be good enough but they are a messy grinder.

Yes thats true. We have a Rocky on TM at present 15mths old and New Burrs $500, quite a bit more than I wanted to pay.

          Cheers

              Hey Chris,

Id either go for something like the 0480, or go nuts and buy a Ditting or something. The Super Jolly is not the most awesome grinder for syphon/drip. Totally fine for espresso, but I get way too many fines for brewed coffee.

Know what you mean about the annoyance in constantly flipping between the two ... its driving me a little crazy ... I think I need a second grinder also ... and maybe I also want to upgrade the SJ ... : ;D

Re: Grinder for Syphon and Drip

I to find it a hassle changing settings cleaning out the doser etc. Just no room for 2 grinders on my bench.
The sunbeam is fine, mine is modified with a plastic bush instead of the dodgy rubber one. But it still produced a fair amount of static but this wouldnt bother your syphon.

It is pretty hard to justify such a costly purchase at times.

Just bought some esmarelda today from Brother Baba Budan $25 for 250gms , wife thinks I am nuts Im sure.

Same price I just paid for my mini!

Im using the mini for syphon now, and much easier with the doser (than doserless rocky) when you are busy getting everthing else organised.

Good luck getting a grinder, the em0450 is basically the same as em0480 but plastic base not stainless steel you could try that one.

kicking myself in the head >.>

i had the grind on my em0480 just right for stovetop, changed it to coarser for syphon, flicked it back and i wasnt getting the same grind from it! wasted like 3 serves until i got it where i wanted

i think ive fixed it back but one can never be too sure S:

anyways id also love to hear if people are using dedicated grinders for their syphons and what tehyre getting out of it (:
