    Rocky- Azz- no contest...

The Iberital is good, but its an appliance. The rocky is a tank and will still be grinding in 10 yrs....

Personally I chose the Challenge a while ago because of the infinitely adjustable worm gear. I used a friends Rocky and found the steps too far apart. I found it incredibly frustrating. Apparently the Rocky can be modded to be step less if you are willing. If i had my time again i would have bought a second hand larger unit, (which i now use), you can often pick up second hand Mazzers for around $500.

shortmac, mine is a 07 new to me but acouple of years old.

Hooked, this was one of the problems i was weighing up for the rocky.
also the timer seems like a good idea for consistancy in dosing

I was just thinking, having to do all those mods to the rocky to get a ok grind would i be better in the higher price bracket or will the rocky do what i need?
thanks all for the help, Azz

Re: Iberital Challenge or Rancilio Rocky

With mods the rocky does quite a good grind but doesnt hold a candle to the mini, IMHO (used a mini as a single origin grinder at an old job). So yes I do believe "the next level up" gives a better grind. Maybe you should keep an eye out for second hand grinders.

thanks MM, i had no doubt the Mini would give me a better grind but i was more wondering did i need to be looking that good for a home setup with only making about 2 or 3 a day??

Re: Iberital Challenge or Rancilio Rocky

Its not how many coffees a day you drink, but the balance between your fussiness and your disposable income.

The Rocky is a good grinder, and with some simple mods makes a great match for the Silvia and is infinitely adjustable. How fussy and handy are you?

At the same time a better grinder will probably equal better coffee, and people do upgrade from mid-level Compaks, Mazzers, and Macaps.

Re: Iberital Challenge or Rancilio Rocky

Id be keeping an eye out for second hand grinders and looking at the rocky or above, they come up in the hardware for sale section quite regularly. Provided it has been looked after well there isnt much that can go wrong with these grinders (except a change of burrs). But if you need one now and want to buy new I think you should start a dialogue with some of our sponsors. They have a lot of experience with these grinders and know all their ins and outs and should be able to match you up with the best grinder for you in your price range.

thanks Greg and MM, i am quite handy will be able to do any mods. i suppose if the rocky will grind fine enough and will last then i think i will be going that way.

i will be after a 2nd hand one, my disposable is not to good atm due to buying the silvia.

Rocky definitely grinds fine enough and will last a very long time.

Ill second that. Although the Rocky is not stepless, with decent barista skills you can more than compensate for the fact that it is stepped.

The rocky is my personal brewed coffee grinder (i.e. plunger, syphon etc). Hasnt skipped a beat.
