  • Cant beat a Rocky

    Rancilio Rocky that is

For the price and for the kind of use I give it, its the bees knees. Cant think of a down side. Mine is doserless of course, no point in having those grinds sitting there all day.

I love my Rocky too!! I got the doserless- love the lack of mess (well my wife does anyway) and getting rid of clumps and I can grind while getting everything else sorted. I only ever grind what i need and with the tape mod it cleans pretty well. But a personal preference!
Whichever model u get- dower or doserless they are an awesome unit especially for the $$$$.

Got a Rocky doserless too. I think it clumps quite a bit. How did you get rid of that?
Also, I though the tape mod was a mod for the doser? Whats the mod on a doserless?

        thx.,

            The "teflon tape mod".
            1. Unscrew the hopper from the upper burr carrier
            2. Unscrew the upper burr carrier.
            3. Take this opportunity to give the grinder a quick clean if necessary
            4. Apply several layers of teflon plumbers tape to the thread on the upper burr carrier - You need to apply enough so that when replacing the carrier it is quite tight. Note: the purpose of this is to reduce the slack in the upper burr carrier and eliminate wobbling.
            5. Screw in the upper burr carrier - there should be a bit more resistance then when you put it in.
            6. Screw back in the hopper.

            Done.

Then you can also get some 6mm hose and slice it down the middle length ways.

Place it around the edge of the the grinder body to make a bead between the hopper and the body of the grinder so that when you place the hopper back it is squashed between the hopper and body.

Depress the button you use to normally turn the hopper to adjust the grind and wedge somthing in there to keep it down.

You now have a stepless Rocky! You should be able to now move the hopper by hand with a fair bit of pressure (you dont want it too easy to move by hand as it may move during grinding) to adjust the grind and it should now stay in place wedged be the plastic.

If you are using automotive black 6mm hose it is thicker than the clear plastic hose you can get from Bunnings so it provides more resistance and is less likely to move while grinding.  If you want to use the clear plastic tube because it almost looks standard and is hard to see, just slice two lengths up and put one over the other.

im off to buy a click clack lid for my rocky because after giving it a clean you can really see just how much stale coffee there is left in there after finishing the grind .7L i think fits

                    Re: Cant beat a Rocky

Actually you can Beat a Rocky.

I use the bash my old Doserless on the side to get the dregs out of the spout.

Correct me if Im wrong but the Rocky is a category killer as it has the guts of the MD40. I really liked mine.

Not sure why I didnt consider one this time tho. :-/

Hey guys yeah my typing leaves a little to be desired sometimes or maybe its just late at night and I no longer have any caffine in my system and I get my typing skills mixed up. I meant I love my doser Rocky not doserless - hence the tape mod the Teflon tape mod for the thread works a treat too- just dont add too much Teflon.
Yeah guys for the $$$ it is a brilliant machine especially with a few simple mods!!

                        Re: Cant beat a Rocky

I’m starting to appreciate the Doser on the Rocky now after getting so many big clumps from grinding… I haven’t done any mod to it yet but I use my Thermometer arm to stir the grinds to break up all the clumps.  Afterward,  I use it to scrap the remaining grinds that stuck on the side wall.  Works pretty well.. (but probably missed the inner wall)

i got the newer designed click clack lid for my rocky fits great and from.6 to 1L lid are now the same so all d the job good.

i got a set of scales as well and found that its about 1g that the lid can push out after grinding.

                            Re: Cant beat a Rocky

Roger Wilko...it is a nice grinder. Welcome too.

The split black tube mod is a great modification (and easily reversible if your desire) - I thoroughly recommend it; you will get much more adjustment and a tighter pour from tighter burr plates. They are great value for money these grinders, and built like a little tank.

                            Glad you like him.

                            Cheers
