This is a question Ive been pondering lately.

Would you consider the ECA Best in the category as the Rocky?  Would you rate the Best as a better tool for the job?

Im looking to get a grinder to match my Silvia which is coming as my Christmas present!!!  is the ECA Best worth the extra money?
Yes- but if youre shopping with best money and have space, look to something in the Compak K3/Macap M4/Mazzer mini class. The best is a domestic grinder whereas the others are small commercial with better build, performance and most likely, longevity as well. They will probably be less expensive than a Best as well...

If space is tight, then the Best is a good compromise and better than a rocky doser

And this is the key to grinder maintenance; based of a Fit for Purpose approach..
    Condition Based Maintenance.... 8-) :P

Thanks AM... I knew the answer would be "it depends" but the info provided at least lets me know the sort of things I should keep in mind when I am "it depends-ing"
Thanks for accepting the depens-ing responce... Sorry but many things are not Black and White  ;D

    As you rightly stated...

the info provided at least lets me know the sort of things I should keep in mind when I am "it depends-ing"

And this is the key to grinder maintenance; based of a Fit for Purpose approach..

If your a shop etc then experience will say every so many KG or x number of days and or if not sooner (depending on performance etc).

With lots of work and different beans and oil.. it can glug up the system and cause issues with grind size and consistence...  More of an issue for high through put... But if ya run any oily beans or one that have had flavours added...  Your going to need to clean sooner rather than later.

Thanks AM... being new I think I will leave it as it is for now and do as you have said and pump the lid, Ill review when I do a full clean, which should be approximately every <insert answer here please>
How long is a piece of string ;D

I do mine about every month... But it depends on how many kg I put through it and how it think it is running...

If I take the lid off after being away for a few days and it smells STALE etc... I clean it...

If I have to change the grind and find that I am changing by more than I usually expect for that bean and roast... I clean it...

A bit like how often should I put fuel in my car... It depends on many things....

Thanks to everyone... got my click-clack (black with silver) and cant believe after a few "pushes" of air how much ground coffee came out. What a great simple modification.

I have so far been very happy with my Rocky, although I am aware for work all this week and not getting the chance to use/tinker with it.

I did have one (actually two) additional question on the "teflon tape" mod... do all Rockys need it? And would it be something that would void warranty?

I ask because I have noticed that my Rocky does seem to clump quite a bit, but at the moment I just use a spatula to break the clumps a bit before tamping.

Not all units appear to need the tape, and it just tightens up the thread to assist with finer adjustments / or any slight bouncing; thus consistent grind size. When done in conjunction with the SI tube mod, it can allow you to go stepless, but I found that it was not realy needed.

As you have to un screw to do a full clean, I doubt that it would impact on any warranty... However if you caused physical damage or cross threaded then that would not be covered.

With a clean grinder and FRESH beans I do not have any clumping but do tent to pump the lid during the whole process and that does break up any clumps...

I only just got a rocky yesterday and picked up on this thread... is this "click clack" lid thing but not quite sure... is it for the doserless and goes on the hopper or for the dosered and on the doser chamber? (I got a doserless). And while I understand the type of lid (I think) is there a particular brand I need?
    Hi Dat68s

I just got a Rocky myself, though mine is with doser.  The brand of the lid is "ClickClack", I think my wife got it from Kmart.  It goes on top of the hopper.  They come in various colours but the black with silver lever bits looks way cool on the Rocky.

    Cheers

    Luwaks

    Tanks in advance.
