Re: Can you wash the burr of grinder?

I have seen burrs developing rust spots between the blades due to tiny water drops (after an incomplete dry) in less than 10 minutes. So I would recommend to be quick to dry all the water completely.

Good idea, speleomike. I like it.

However, Im in the just brush it category. I mean, they give you a brush to do it with...and if thats not to your liking then you can always buy a cheapo toothbrush, right?

EDIT: "oils help prevent rust" Darn right they do! This is exactly, spot on why Id rather not wash the burrs. Good work on running coffee straight through, too. Id rather a coffee flavoured coffee than a detergent flavoured one any day...

    Hi

When I cleaned the burrs of my grinder (the burrs, not the assembly) I washed them in detergent/water just like the washing up, dried them with the tea towel then placed them on top of the coffee machine where the cups are warmed. That thoroughly dries them after an hour.

i was mine in water and backflush cleaner to get the oils off. blow off water and dry on reassembly i run some coffee through it to get some fresh coffees and oils on the burrs. not sure if it does anything but dirty a nice clean grinder but the theory is oils help prevent rust.

Again... like others have stated.... burrs are nothing more than hardened steel. As long as the burrs are out of the machine they can be cleaned with water, detergent, etc... AS LONG AS YOU DRY THEM PROPERLY. I dont care what others say.... water will not hurt the burrs as long as theyre dried. I recommend using compressed air to make sure all moisture is removed.

BTW, Orphan Espresso cleans the burrs in their hand grinders with a JoeGlo solution. Has nothing to do with them being from a manual grinder either. Later!

    Hi all,
Thanks for your info and reply.
    The youtube link is below
    http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Sunbeam+grinder+clean&search_ type=&aq=f

After re-watch the video again, the speaker say "never never contact with water, if you do that, its pretty much over"

Yes, I do feel regret, I should read through the introduction first....
And when I clean it, I did left it over night to dry.
Although I found there is a thin gap inside the burr, I though it did dry through...

And thanks you all for the useful info, at least my burr wont just break like that.
(I hope its just a myth..)

Page 12 of the manual - Care & Cleaning says:

Do not immerse any part of the burr assembly in water or any other liquid.

I think that says it all  8-)
I think they mean while burrs are attached to the grinder

If you pull the burr assembly apart it is not dangerous to wash.
The burrs are just a great big hunk of hardened steel
However one must make sure all is dry before re-assembly

I washed the top burr of my EM0480 and just made sure I dried it thoroughly. Had no ill effects.

General instructions are to keep all water away from the grinding burrs. You should clean them with a suitable brush.

Its NOT a good idea to skip the instructions

    Gday Colin,
another reason not to wash the burrs, apart from the rust as KK has mentioned, is that there may be some water trapped in the burr assembly somewhere.
I realise that there is a minimal chance of this happening, but a chance there is.
This water may be transferred to the electrics when you re-assemble and turn it back on. Then there may be a large boom or a room full of non-working appliances, after the circuit breaker has tripped.
Also, do you have a link to the youtube video that youre talking about?
    All the best,
    Steve.

Can you wash the burr of grinder?

    Hi all,
I am a newbie about both coffee machine and grinder. (Sunbeam em 6910 & 480)
Just got the grinder for second hand and start to use it with my stove top mocha at this moment before I received my machine.
Before use it I just skip the manual and clean it, because its second hand one.
I rinse the burr quickly and dry it with towel. and mop the other stuff with clean water.

However, when I watch the youtube about more info about both expresso machine and grinder, I hear the speaker said you can not let the burr contact with water, otherwise it will be ...damaged (or some meaning like that)
    Its that ture??
I know it should not be wash all the time, but even once will break it??

I am pretty worried about my grinder now.
I hope I did not break it even before I use it.

Any one can let me know if its true or not??

    Cheers

    Colin
