The M5 has a lighter action than the Mazzer and that means it doesnt tend to throw the grinds as far to the left when dosing.
I think this is due to the design of the action instead of whether the action is lighter. The BNZ for example has a much more solid action than the M4 and provides a great tactile feel all through the dosing action, and drops straight.

Thanks for all the feedback. I will be heading into my local supplier to have a play with the various machines with a better idea of some of the features I should be looking at.

I have a stepless M4 and for the price point, id suggest this grinder for the money!

I think the Mini has a lot going for it, but that the M4 is an almost identical twin - though quieter and with less left fling. On that basis, the M4 gets the nod every time.

I have an older, stepped, Macap.
The steps are very small and I find that makes it easier for me to know where I am with the grind size.
    Yep,

    Ditto for me.... 8-)

I think the macap might actually be winning on the home use front due to it being a tad quieter and doesnt seem to make as much mess as the mazzer (throwing the grounds left).

The doser sweeping cleaner is a biggie too.

BUT... do I trade off the stepless?!?!!
Macaps are available as stepless too (and that is the version we have).

The Mazzers, Macaps and Compaks at this price point all do a good job.

Another couple of differences for you:
    1. The Mazzer and Compak have a metal rimmed doser- handy if you like to tap your pf on the doser lip.
    2. The Macap stepless grinders are probably the easiest to adjust due to a worm gear adjuster

I dont think you would be disappointed with any of these, and I dont think there is a clear winner.

edit: for those of us in remote places (Tassie!) the internet is our only real way of trying out the different grinders!

    Too hard

Im not throwing stones at Mazzer grinders,

But there are a lot of other grinders on the market that do the job equally well, are constructed just as ruggedly and in a lot of areas work better than a Mazzer; so dont get caught up with the wave of emotion that the only grinder worth having is a Mazzer. Its mainly down to the Net that Mazzer grinders have gained such a following.

Best thing you can do, is go to a reputable specialist retailer such as our Site Sponsors listed over on the L/H side of the page, and then do some hands-on trials with what ever units they have on display and then make a choice.... 8-)

Hi sterod and welcome to CS!

I think the only info that has been left out from the previous responses is:

    a) The Macap runs quieter than the Mazzer
    b) The Macaps have a chrome finish
    c) The Mazzers finish looks more robust

Both good grinders and I agree, the decision is likely to come down to what looks and feels right for you.

Depending on where youre located may also influence your choice of vendor. We are Sydneys Talk Coffee agent and located in Sylvania, DiBartoli are in Bondi, Sydney, and Chris from Talk Coffee is in Melbourne.

Re: Mazzer Mini v. Macap M5

I have the Mazzer but I only got it last week and had a play with both of them at Talk Coffee before making my mind up and it took me a while.  The M5 has a lighter action than the Mazzer and that means it doesnt tend to throw the grinds as far to the left when dosing.

The dosing chamber on the mini is fixed with 4 screws through metal while the M5 has 2 through metal and 2 through the plastic.  The plastic develops hairline cracks through time but it is only cosmetic.

The mini has the option of the smaller hopper but an M4 would solve that problem.

The adjustment of the grind felt more intuitive with the Mazzer collar than the winding adjustment of the M5.

The M5 sweeps cleaner than the Mazzer in factory trim.  The mazzer now comes with a metal catch tray instead of plastic.

Chris assured me that there was very little between the 2 but I chose the Mazzer in the end, I couldnt personally get over the reputation and the look, to be fair to the M5 I went there with a pre conception of buying a Mazzer and after a week I am quite happy.

I am sure that Chris will follow up with anything I have left out.

No to confuse you any more but have you considered the Compak K3 Elite as well?  Matches nicely with my Giotto. Have not used the Mazzer or Macap but similar and at least $100 cheaper.

Great review b/w Mazzer & Compak on Greg Pullmans site.

I think Di Bartoli & Talk Coffee sell all 3 of these so worth getting in contact with them. I assume both will recommend comparing all 3 side by side in the store as it will come down to personal preference.

    Mazzer Mini v. Macap M5

    Hi guys...

Ive read all (most!) of the old threads re mini & m5 grinders and there doesnt seem to be a lot of different in opinions between the two. Im just wondering if anyone out there has experience of both and could list any pros/cons for each.

Im looking to upgrade to a GPP and want to get the marriage right!

    Cheers.
