Re: Hard to adjust mazzer
and now for the best news.
I pulled it apart completely, to remove all traces of built up muck.
Cleaned up the adjustment collar and every other part with a range of things from toothpics, hard bristle brushes and toothbrushes. Blew everything out with an air blower and vacuumed everything else.
Decided i was not going to apply any grease at all to the threads. I figure this way less chance of stray ground coffee getting stuck on them again.
I thought, if its not smooth enough, i will take the collar off again and lightly grease the first 1/4 of it only which makes contact.
After re-assembling, it is just like new. Very easy to adjust grind indeed.
Now i just need to order the little adjustment pin which i snapped off whilst trying to remove the collar yesterday.
A happy chap once again i am.
A big thanks yet again to KK for all his help in this matter and to the boys at work

Re: Hard to adjust mazzer
My gut feeling as I hinted above re cross-threading was gunk & solidified coffee as you describedOriginally posted by 1B3E393F10510 link=1253146638/17#17 date=1280112705Well took it to work with me today and had the fitters take a look.
We used a leather oil filter remover to get it off. Took a fair bit of effort though. Once we got it moving, then the rest by hand was easy enough.
Brush & Vacuum all the threads on both top and bottom burr sections for best results
Only add graphite on the brass touch rings or the contact points of the top burr carrier and the grinder body
Good to hear it was stubborn but easy once it got going
I am very relieved that no damage was apparent on the threads ;D

Looking inside, no wonder it was stuck. The build up of old coffee was very thick.
Does not look like it has been cross threaded and everything has now been thoroughly cleaned.
Once everything dries, will put it back together again and see how it all goes.
Have read posts of people rubbing a little bit of olive oil on the threads, not sure how much of a good idea that is though

Fortunately in Australia retailers dont make their own rulesOriginally posted by 56656A607D5B432A040 link=1253146638/15#15 date=1280080981In the US, adusting the grind when the grinder is stopped can void the warranty with some resellers at least.

Re: Hard to adjust mazzer
In the US, adusting the grind when the grinder is stopped can void the warranty with some resellers at least. The grinders come with what LOOKS like white lithium grease on the threads. I tried food safe silicone (Dow 111) and it did not work well AT ALL!. Went with a small schmear of Campy grease worked well into the threads so that it would not enter the grinding area and it works great.

Re: Hard to adjust mazzer
thanks again guys
will now give the lubricant a go and see how i go
Sort of agree with KK, if it was threaded, it should have been very hard if not impossible to wind it all the way back down again.
fingers corssed
have sprayed it and will now let it soak in for a while

Re: Hard to adjust mazzer
2 possibilities on this
1] If you have cross threaded the collar it will be rare that it would be possible to wind the collar all the way down
2] If it is wound down all the way its possible that its locked the top & bottom blades together

Re: Hard to adjust mazzer
Possibly a lubricant/dispersant and then it will need a real good clean...Originally posted by 7356515778390 link=1253146638/11#11 date=1280048793i had a funny feeling i may have cross threaded it last time, and i dare say this confirms it.
I was looking at a new grinder as you know but did hope to sell this one. Not looking good now.
Can i spray anything onto the threads to get it off, then have it inspected.
Also any way i can tell if its been cross threaded
My advice though, take it to Anthony at Genovese. They are an importer and will have the right gear to do the job properly....

Re: Hard to adjust mazzer
Sorry to hear it John....Sounds like you have cross threaded it to meOriginally posted by 644146406F2E0 link=1253146638/8#8 date=1280046040I think i let this one go too long now.
Today i finally decided to pull it all apart and give it a good clean. Apply some graphite to the threads to make it easier to adjust.
WELL WELL WELL
i can not turn it at all now It is stuck so badly that i broke the little lever that screw into the side to help adjust.
Thats not an issue ans can easily replace it, but there is no hope of getting the adjustment coller off now
any tips?
It should move even without a lubricant.
I am thinking some protective rubber and a very big vice? Hope there is not too much damage.... :-/

Re: Hard to adjust mazzer
I hope you did not cross thread the collar when re assembling
If not & In any case you dont need the adjuster rod to unscrew it

Re: Hard to adjust mazzer
thanks for the tips, will look in the hardware store for some powdered graphite.
Just to clarify, i only have it working when adjusting grind, not after a clean and re-assemble

Re: Hard to adjust mazzer
If you are reassembling after a dismantle there would be no need to have the unit running because there should be no beans in it to cause a jam.

Re: Hard to adjust mazzer
amen to that Mal
Also... be careful while adjusting the collar while grinder is running (especially if youre winding it in after a dismantle). Much damage to be done if it reaches Zero by accident!
