Re: Time to upgrade my EM480?
So I took the plunge and picked up a K3 Touch from Di Bartoli yesterday.
It took me about half an hour and over 10 shots to get used to the stepless grinder but the results were excellent once I nailed the grind. I used some PNG Waghi I was struggling to get good pours with from the EM480. With the EM480 the shots were thin and watery, lacking flavour. With the K3T the shots were thick and syrupy, dense and full of flavour.
The K3 Touch is a great grinder, but I do have a few gripes about a few things such as the flimsy hopper lid, the poor grind indicator & the location of the dose adjuster on the bottom of the machine. Thankfully the results in the cup let you overlook a lot of these problems, but if the Mazzer Mini E wasnt nearly double the price youd probably pick one of those up as its overall build quality is superior.
Things I like about the K3T:
- The rails to balance your group handle on
- Its not as messy as I expected it to be - and the design of the base of the machine collects most of your stray grinds.
- Apart from the few gripes I listed above, its a solid grinder that hopefully will last a long time.

Re: Time to upgrade my EM480?
all advice i have been given says that a grinder of the K3T standard will make a big difference compared to the sunbeam, due to a far more consistent grind and tolerances in grind settings.
Take the plunge!!!

Re: Time to upgrade my EM480?
Thanks for your responses. I think the upgrade is definitely on the the cards. The em480s inconsistency seems to be more and more evident lately - I might get 1 in 10 roasts that it nails the grind.

Re: Time to upgrade my EM480?
I have paired up a Compak K3 Elite (same as the K3T but with doser) with an EM6910. The results compared to the EM0480 was definitely noticeable.
I am still very new to coffee snobbery so the best way I could describe the difference is that it was smoother, more complex flavours and the taste simply seemed to linger longer.

Yep.Originally posted by 7D65606075644F7D717E2627100 link=1254185569/1#1 date=1254185945A better grinder will = better coffee, its a simple equation. I say go for it.
Weve paired up the 6910 with K3 a couple of times with good results.

Time to upgrade my EM480?
I have been using my sunbeam EM480 paired with an EM6910 for almost a year now and seem to have hit a wall. A common wall it seems judging from what Ive read on the forum. I often get the case where the perfect grind is somewhere in between two steps on the grinder. One step coarser deprives the shot of flavour, and one step finer turns the shot bitter.
Has anyone paired a grinder like the ECA KS or Compak K3 Touch with an EM6910? What where your results? I know it will be tough trying to get a demo with one of these grinders paired with an EM6910 in a store, so if anyone has any experiences they could share that would be great.
