Re: Which grinder to suit Giotto Premium?
Coffeehorse - as someone who can compare Rocky with Rocky modded (the tube mod) with Super Jolly I think a modded Rocky boxes (no pun intended) well above its weight. The SJ brings a consistency and sweetness to shots that the Rocky as modded cannot do, but how long is a piece of string. I think the difference in price is worthwhile, but others may not. The Rocky as modded in my opinion at least, is still a very very good grinder make no mistake.
Cheers

Re: Which grinder to suit Giotto Premium?
If your talking Rocky in this bunch , youd have to have a Cunill el Tranquilo as an option. Surely that would be better value than a Rocky....Originally posted by 0E2A232320201A0E2A36282A450 link=1254295506/14#14 date=1254464429I would say anything less from the below list is false economy
Minimum - Rancilio Rocky
Bigger motor , larger blades, built like a tank .... not pretty , but all the same internals as the Cunill commercial grinders.
Get my vote for best value (affordable ) grinder on the market.

Re: Which grinder to suit Giotto Premium?
Add K3 touch to that list. It is closer to a rocky in price than a mazzer but is on par with the mini. The only disadvantage (if it is even one) is that it doesnt have a doser.

Re: Which grinder to suit Giotto Premium?
I know you said that you want to spend $300 but you also asked what is the best grinder to suit your Giotto Premium
I would say anything less from the below list is false economy
Minimum - Rancilio Rocky
Best suited - Mazzer mini, Macap M4/5, Compak K3 Elite
Bargain if size and space allows - Used commercial grinder
Dont forget a good comfortable tamper is essential

Re: Which grinder to suit Giotto Premium?
I wouldnt put anything less than a M4/Mini with it (maybe a KS or K3), and would be tempted to save up for much, much more.

Re: Which grinder to suit Giotto Premium?
Id second the keeping the eyes peeled for a commercial grinder (if youre not put off by having a 15-20 kg behemoth on the kitchen bench ;D), you never know what might come up. They can often be picked up for a lot less than a good domestic grinder.Originally posted by 494842514F4A50230 link=1254295506/7#7 date=1254305442Second-hand commerical grinders are usually easy to come by, although youd want to inspect before buying and maybe budget for a set of replacement burrs.
Otherwise - K3, M4, Mini, would be an appropriate match for the GP, and probably worth saving for, rather than settling for a cheaper one.

;DOriginally posted by 330801120B22010914600 link=1254295506/10#10 date=1254387895use pre- ground from the super market, the stuff on special is usually best, because its closest to the used by date
Just on a side note, chris from talk coffee does a thermostability upgrade for this machine also, pretty cheap for the amount of research hes done and the results that ive heard, do a search for it on here, youll find it.
As far as the grinder goes, even if you have to wait a little longer, and put up with average coffee out of the breville, save those bickies, and get the best you can possibly afford.....it really really makes a difference. a common thought around here is you can allow half the money you paid for the machine for a grinder.......

You can put a wanted ad in the Coffee Hardware for Sale section of the forum. CS members are generally people who look after their equipment well.
They are also known for regularly suffering upgraditis.

Re: Which grinder to suit Giotto Premium?
Thank you all, for your valuable input.
Im thinking with my budget knocking around $300, i could pick up a 2nd hand Rocky?
And Greg, ill certainly be trying her out, with or without fresh grinds!
Im certainly going to have to go second hand, so id better start my research into what to look for....

Re: Which grinder to suit Giotto Premium?
I have my ECM Giotto paired with a Compak K3 Elite (doser) and can certainly recommend it. AFAIK the K3T is exactly the same apart from being doserless and is nearlyh $300 cheaper.
What is your budget?
Second-hand commerical grinders are usually easy to come by, although youd want to inspect before buying and maybe budget for a set of replacement burrs.

If you can get your Breville to grind fine enough, then at least youll be able to use your new baby and drink reasonable coffee. Id certainly be trying it.

Re: Which grinder to suit Giotto Premium?
The Rocky, especially with a very simple and reversible mod for stepless and tight carriers is very good value and built to last forever...and if it, modded, can serve it up well to my commercial 2 group, it can serve it up well to anything.
Cheers

Re: Which grinder to suit Giotto Premium?
Id certainly agree with that, but I couldnt imagine keeping a beautiful machine like this under wraps while saving up for a better grinder.Originally posted by 03363B3C08143831313232570 link=1254295505/2#2 date=1254296734Our recommendation is that suitable grinders for the Giotto start at the Compak K3T. Dont buy a Ferrari and then expect it to run well on diesel!
