Re: Mazzer Mini (Doser) - design disaster

Hi guys - my first post! Ive had my Mini for the last two years, and very quickly got rid of the guard above the outlet/chute, and the screwed-on tamper thing, then made up a small guard out of a thin sheet of flexible aluminium; solved all the left-throw problems entirely. I still think its a great grinder for the $$.

I have the Super Jolly so I dont know if this is applicable but it might help.  I hit the dosing handle like in a cafe environment - fast and allow it to go back by itself as designed - doing that allows the coffee to fall straight into the basket.  I dont have waste from that part of the dosing (perhaps a few grains here and there but really bugger all).  The weight of the SJ ensures that it doesnt move doing the dosing this way, but the Mini might require a hand holding it I dont know.  I just do a quick pulse for a second only to clear the shute and then the rest is gold....mine was pretty good at sweeping from stock but I added some tape to the bottom of the vanes and it sweeps clean with that.  I hope that helps because you sound like a person who is a little disappointed with the purchase...

    Cheers

Yeah, its probably one of the worst Dosers ever designed... Especially given that so much has been invested by Mazzer into the Grinder itself. As you say, no excuse at all....

There are plenty of other genuine commercial grade grinders on the market which do a much better job in total in my opinion.....
Speaking from a purely design and engineering perspective here and based on personal experience with grinders Ive owned or tested, not the results in the cup as thats a whole different theme altogether.....

    ...all good points 2MCM.

Im in the process of deciding on what my new home grinder will be, Mazzer Mini and Compak K3 Touch being frontrunners....

As usual when purchasing coffee equipment it seems to be as much about deciding which imperfections you are willing to live with as anything else.

Lets face it, making coffee is a messy buisness and having used many grinders over the years (everything from EM0480 to a la Marzocco Swift), Ive decided the only thing they have in common is irritating design flaws...and the ability to spread loose grounds meters in any direction.

I think its easy to get a little pent up about this type of thing..

Doser doesnt sweep completely clean. Probably some old grounds in the grinder throat as well. So, you pulse the first 2 or 3 seconds and ditch it and then grind for your coffee. More likely than not, what was in the base for the doser has been turned over now.

Perhaps if the difference is detectable, its time to enter the cupping comp?  :-?

I have no definitive evidence either way yet, but I think we sometimes can worry more about process than the result in the cup.... Often, operator inconsistency will likely be a bigger source of variation...

Food (or was that caffeine) for thought?

While i agree its not the best design, i think we have to remember its a commercial grinder, designed to deliver consistant doses when the doser is full.It was never designed to dose per shot. Most of the mods people do (the tape and the inverted cup) are work-arounds because theyre using the doser in a way it wasnt designed for.As for the shooting grinds to the left i totally agree, that ends up in alot of wastage, even in a commercial situation.

    Yes I totally agree
I have documented my mods here For my Mazzer Major - Bigger model but similar problems

I now have a tweaked doser that works well
Here is a photo of the doser exit chute funnel for even distribution mod

Mazzer Mini (Doser) - design disaster

Theres no doubt the Mazzer Mini does the bare minimum you want from a grinder - grind coffee beans well - but so little thought has gone into anything beyond that. So bad is the doser, its like theyve set out to conspire against us.

First the sweep. Unless you modify the blades with tape or something, you will always have a layer of unswept grounds left on your doser floor.  So easy to fix, but they couldnt be bothered.

Next the forks. Youll be tempted to keep them to tap on, but otherwise all they do is get in the road of your distribution and serve as a rack to gather spilled grounds. The sooner you lose them the better.

Then the spill tray. If you have the plastic one, its already broken. The newer metal one, like the forks, just adds to your cleaning ritual, without catching enough to be useful. Again, the sooner you lose it the better.

Up above in the doser theres a little finger guard. Itll stop you from getting into the chute to brush out stale grounds. Youll need to lose that as well.

Speaking of which, brush all you like, youll never get the top of those vanes clean again.

Next up, the throw to the left. Youll soon learn the faster you tug that lever, the further your grounds wind up under your machine, or whatevers to the left of your grinder. You might try disassembling your doser and adding a little funnel. It will help a bit, when its not getting clogged.

And finally but of course foremost, the sheer volume of mess thrown in all directions. Mazzer has cleverly curved the front, and indented the forks zone, so nothing youll find on planet Earth will fit flush against it to catch the grounds. Your destiny is to sweep the surrounding square meter of bench furiously after every coffee. Itll keep you awake at night. But youll never solve it.

Italians, eh? Just be thankful they dont make planes.
Working...
