  • To change or not to change?

At the moment Ive got a Nemox Lux grinder to grind coffee for my Silvia. Im happy with the resaults Im getting but it is a little messy and the shoot clogs up.
Ive heard so much goods things about the Rocky and was thinking of purchasing one.  What is stopping me is, will I get better resaults from the Rocky then I do from my Lux?
I know the Lux has conical grinders were as the Rocky has Flat ones.
If I find the quality of the coffee will improve, I am willing to upgrade but if I get the same resaults, then I dont see the point in upgrading.
I love my coffee and am always aiming to improve.

Has anyone had experience in this? Would love to hear what people think and any suggestions.

    Thanks
    Tony.

The rocky is not clean and has its own little tricks...

Depending on the $$$ the rocky could be a step up, but if looking at full price I would suggest there are other grinders that might be better.

As to a direct compare... Can not say as I have never used the other unit.

The chute will clog up on a rocky too and most grinders or that matter. If its an issue for you get a dosered grinder as the chute will be easier to access with a brush. Likewise with a doser you may find the mess more contained.
Compak k3 seem to be the entry level for the more serious gear. Out of the box it is stepless and has little-zero movement in the burr carrier. Im not sure going from lux to a rocky will be much of a jump. Rocky will last longer as it has a more solid burr carrier and motor. However out of the box some people report a bit of play. Many people fix this easily with some tape on the adjustment thread to stiffen it up and also allow it to be step-less. You will find with the lux that over time the lower burr may develop play leading to inconsistent grind particle size. Im not sure if much can be done about this.

        Thank you for your response.
The spout on the Lux can be easily removed and the shoot cleaned so its not that much of a big deal. I was more wondering more whether the quality of the grind on the Rocky is better and therefore producing a better tasting shot compared to a grinder like the Lux. Conical burrs compared to Flat burrs.

For me... I doubt that I could pick the differenec...

However depending on the bean etc the difference could be enough for me to notice... I guess it comes down to ya pallet and the machine as I am sure the machine and how it is used will also impact...

But that I mean the grind size / dose and tamp will affect the shot and thus the grind size may be the factor as to Flat burrs..

Re: To change or not to change?

At this end of the market the conical versus flat burr debate is not really very relevant. There is no comparison between a lux and a Robur or Kony. At one end of the market it is cheaper to manufacture a conical grinder at the other end of the market is is more expensive. Go figure.

Give me a machined metal burr carrier, ball bearing drive mechanism flat burr grinder anyday over a plastic burr carrier and plastic bushes of the lux. A flat burr grinder built well will give a better cup then a conical grinder built poorly.

              Thanks muppet_man67, I agree.
So you would recommened the Rocky as it is built more solid?

I you didnt already own a grinder I would recomend the Rocky. Im not sure its entirely justified as an upgrade, rather an improved replacement when your lux wears out.

If your looking to upgrade then I would start with a K3 touch or better.

Re: To change or not to change?

Id not bother with an upgrade to anything less than a Macap M4 or Mazzer Mini. Your Silvia will make short work of any grinder, so even a Compak K10 would be a recommended and worthwhile upgrade. Price/Improvement ratio, Id pass the rocky on the road.

Re: To change or not to change?

My two cents worth is you are looking to improve.

What you get with a better grinder is improved grind consistency and a cleaner grind. Also, at a lower rpm speed you beans dont heat up as much when you grind.

The lux and small conical grinders are all plastic and gears with a high rpm engine. You will see a marked improvement to a flat bur like a rocky.

Going to a dearer grinder will give you even better performance but, you wont notice as much difference as you will from a lux to a rocky for example.

                    I hope that helps!
