Re: New grinder suggestions please
thanks for the suggestions. My measurements were very conservative and as it turns out the Compak fits perfectly under the cabinet with about 5 mm to spare!
Im very happy with it so far but still working on adjusting to get the best grind (half the fun)
The pluses: built like a tank, very very quiet, fits perfectly, looks great (I didnt want chrome as the Galatea has enough and for me it would have been ott) the all metal construction is great and the lack of a built-in tamp is also very good as I could imagine the tamp getting in the way.
Minuses: the adjustment for the portafilter distance is a joke, a plastic screw that gets caught on the portafilter so its been removed.
Thats about it for me but I guess ppl grinding for more than just espresso shots (I dont) would find the poor grind indicators a problem, it would take very little fior the raised bumps to be coloured white but that is something that could be done at the users end.
Its also meant I can retire my virtually new Sunbeam grinder and use my Iberital for the wifes decaf, something Im very happy about as Ive never warmed to the Sunbeam. Its funny how two essentially the same grinders can be so different? or maybe Im just comfortable with my old Iberital?

Re: New grinder suggestions please
My opinion of the BB004 is that its slow, clunky, built like a tank but unfortunately looks like a german-made tank too (original panzer w/ big welds, not a nice shiny russian one). Id partner your Domus Galatea with a Macap M4 in Chrome for matching good looks and a great cup of coffee - Ive had the Galatea side by side with an M4 for nearly 2 years and loved everything about the combo. The M4 has a cleaner doser than the Mini, clumps less (imo) and is more likely to drop straight without mods, making it my choice at the price point.
For less money, you could look at a ECA Best, but I think these are a definite step down from the M4/Mini and often stepped, and at this price point you probably want a stepless one!

Re: New grinder suggestions please
Hi fullbora,
Remember that there are lots of "home-made" options for small hoppers that are especially useful for limited heights, especially if you grind on demand and only do a few cups at a time.
Im sure a search will turn up some very good, inexpensive options.

Re: New grinder suggestions please
Sorted !
Thanks once again Roger, great advice, great price and cheers for the great tips today (grinding, tamping, milk texturing......)
I got to check out and try the grinders on my short list today at Supreme Roasters
I worked out a way to squeeze the K3 Elite WBC in next to the cupboard but Id still like a quote on the smaller hopper we spoke about.
Looking forward to picking it up off you (and picking your brains for more invaluable info!)
cheers

Re: New grinder suggestions please
Hi Gordon
Dont forget you have the $50 voucher redeemable 12 months towards a grinder purchase from buying your Domus Galatea through Supreme Roasters.
For your purposes and budget I would recommend the BB04 or the ECA Best either Silver or Chrome.. both will come within budget with discount. The K3 Elite WBC comes in slightly to tall for your purposes. Otherwise the Mazzer mini will fit within your price range but they are at least 2 weeks away from new stock landing into Australia. We have the BB04 and ECA Best on display if you want to come bench test them anytime.

Re: New grinder suggestions please
The Mazzer Mini comes in at just on or around your budget brand new. I think that could be your best option.
The macap M4 or M5 are a little extra. Consider the Bezzera BB003 for about $700 or the ECA Best for up to $750.
Someone is selling a second-hand Mazzer Mini that would be well within your budget. Check the For Sale section and grab that would be my recommendation.

Re: New grinder suggestions please
The Compak k3 elite - the one with the metal forks is best (if you can source the short hopper) or the Mazzer Mini (with the short hopper) would be your best options - off the top of my head.
The Compak definitely looks better but then again it is up to taste.
There is a Mazzer Mini in the For sale section now.

A Mazzer Mini with standard hopper seems to tick all your boxes and is in stock.

New grinder suggestions please
Hi All,
Im thinking at this stage about a new grinder and would be interested in ppls opinions based on my criteria before I buy one from a sponsor.
I would like a doser model (not wishing to start a doser vs doserless discussion please, I currently have a Challenge doser and a Sunbeam doserless for my wifes decaf, I just prefer the doser)
I plan to replace the Challenge as my main grinder and consign it to being the decaf grinder selling off the Sunbeam.
I have 490mm clearance to work with so Im limited there.
I only grind for espresso, no plunger etc and I only make a couple of coffees a day.
A quieter model would be nice but not essential.
Has to look reasonable as itll be in yer face next to my Galatea.
Budget under $800.
any thoughts would be much appreciated
