Does anyone know where in Australia I can buy one of the above?
Thanks
Are you specifically looking for a zass? Or will other manual grinders do?
The zassenhaus is pretty hard to come by. The older / antiques, occasionally come around on ebay
I have a few vintage hand grinders available on my website- I think there is a fine Zassenhaus amongst them... from memory.
Some of the Zassenhaus grinders are truly superb- and I would have to say- from experience- are actually better than the modern ceramic grinders. They can easily handle a broader range of grind sizes- and in many case have more powerful burrs that require significantly less turning. I would also think they are more robust... Another vintage brand that I have found works BRILLIANTLY is thr KYM brand wooden grinders.
Another thing I like about the old wooden grinders is that you can hold them between your knees- indeed many of them are designed for this with knee shaped indentations on the side.
The thing about the old wooden grinders is that they can vary from brand to brand and model to model.
In general all Zassenhaus grinders are a very good quality.
I have a Hario ceramic burr grinder -and it is very good- But I always use my KYM- It is better.
Hi coffeesniffer and a belated welcome to CS.
Have only just seen your post.
No one is bringing Zassenhaus coffee grinders into Australia at present to my knowledge. I was given this information mid 2009 by a non sponsor in Victoria who listed them on their website. They no longer list them.
My nephew, who lives in Denmark, bought me a new one over there and my sister brought it back for me late last year. They are certainly a very good hand grinder but they are not cheap, even in Europe. So now I have two Zassenhaus grinders, the other being definitely a vintage model of the same knee grinder. It is interesting to see the detail changes that have been made, even though they look basically the same at a casual glance.
I also have a Kyocera hand grinder and it is great for grinding for single cup (double shot) coffees from the Aeropress. Its a bit of a chore if you wish to grind for more than one, though.
All the best with your quest.
