Re: Rapid decline in EM0480
Just got mine replaced, they didnt even ask at first - just took the old one, gave me a new one and told me to see the cash point.
Just fired it up and thought Id start on 10, choked the machine!
Far cry from the 4-5 I have been using. Tried again few clicks up and working great.
Got a spare spacer now if needed too, just in case.

Re: Rapid decline in EM0480
I brought one of these in Dec last year. 2nd week in January it developed a fault - it just wouldnt turn on, either by the auto switch or the main switch on the side. Initially this was intermittent but over a few days it became permanent.
Took it back to the store (harvey normans in hamilton,NZ) and they swapped for another unit. New unit is much better - it actually works. Also the grind is much better - the old unit needed to be 6-7 to get any decent pour - the replacement I have set to 14.
Replacement has been great.

Where are you?Originally posted by 133522032F2E34322123342F32400 link=1264914090/5#5 date=1264929335Also, where is the best place to find a second hand unit?
Sponsor OMaras sells used catering equipment and almost always has 2nd hand grinders on hand.
They come "as is" though so it depends on what kind of technician you are and your confidence in picking one worth a go.
Otherwise, look for a 2nd hand unit here in the For Sale section.
If you want new and are willing to stretch over $500 youll never need to buy another grinder (depending on your space issue).

Re: Rapid decline in EM0480 - "What grinder next?"
I clean it after every second 250g bag, just to reduce the clumping and keep it fresh. (NB Im a technician by trade, I know I didnt do anything wrong to it during cleaning!!).
So if I do take it back for refund, I guess Ill change this post up a bit and ask "What grinder next?". I dont mind spending $500 for a reliable and well performing one, or a bit more if there is a real difference.
Also, where is the best place to find a second hand unit? I assume the ex pro units are all pretty large. Bench space is a premium unfortunately.

Re: Rapid decline in EM0480
Mine has done similar although not as fast and as its not even a year old Im not wanting to mod it.
Rang sunbeam this week and the lady emailed me the guide they have on removing the lower burr (not hard, doesnt really need a guide) to check how many spacers I had there.
As I had three she said thats the max and nothing else could be done and advised to take it back to place of purchase for an exchange.
I reckon I could go another spacer and it would work but taking her advice and exchanging this week hopefully.
Maybe I should look at something better but even if I can get a refund I cant really afford much more on something better - at least Ive got the kyocera as backup now.

Re: Rapid decline in EM0480
Welcome to CS SubContractor.
Shouldnt need to dismantle and clean out a grinder (particularly after such a short period) to keep it grinding at the same consistency of setting. Quality grinders are resilient and long lived, cleaned out or not, their settings do not change.
Under guarantee????? Take it back, not fit for purpose. Use the credited funds to put towards a better grinder to mate to your espresso machine.

So, Id like to know if this speed of deteriation is normal or there are more serious things going on. Thanks a lot
Andrew
My 480 started to go down hill afer a few weeks - three or four clicks to get the same grind out of the same beans. I really dont think its worth fiddling and mucking around with these grinders.
But thats just my opinion - I got rid of it and bought a 15yo Faema commercial that will go forever, for the same price as a new 480 . I couldnt believe the huge difference in my shot quality.
Good luck,
Don

Rapid decline in EM0480
Hi All
I see there are a few posts discussing the declining grind of the EM0480, and a couple of fixes - shims and the wood bearing (not sure if the wood is still the thing to do...).
My problems have come on REALLY quickly. Within a week or two, Ive gone from 8 or 9 to 7 then 5 and now even 4 is too large (or is it that its too iregular?). Im currently destroying perfectly good (and seriously expensive) beans, as I cant seem to keep up with the degredation thats occuring. The machine is about 6 months old and has had little use (about 5 to 8 cups a week through, you guessed it, a 6910).
So, Id like to know if this speed of deteriation is normal or there are more serious things going on. Thanks a lot
