  • Rocky doserless mod

    Gday all,
I was going to perform this mod on my Rocky, check this link:-

    http://www.coffeegeek.com/forums/esp...machines/71026

Ive googled, checked the yellow pages and emailed numerous companies and no one seems to stock these thumbnuts, or if they do they only sell them in packs of 100 or more .
I emailed McMater Carr in the states and they told me that they wont send anything overseas anymore to individuals .
Does anybody know of a supplier for these nuts, or does anybody know anybody that would be willing to make some. I could probably make them myself, but I dont have access to a lathe.
    Thanks,
    Steve.

    Hi Steve,

Have you thought of trying an electronics supplies shop like DSE or similar? If no luck there, Ive always found that Blackwoods can supply just about anything you can think of, so they might be worth a try. All I can think of at the moment...... :-?

    Mal.

What about good old Bunnings. They have a pretty big selection of nuts and bolts in very small quantities.

There are plenty of specialist bolt shops in major cities - eg Metro Bolts in Richmond in Melbourne.

Almost certainly theyll have this sort of thing. But most of them wouldnt know what email is - use the phone instead. (just dont ask: "do you have 4mm nuts?" )

You dont need studs of the exact length. You can buy any longer M4 stainless screw and cut it down to length with a hacksaw (then file the end clean to ensure it engages).

Looking at whats been done there, I reckon it would be easier to use normal M4 screws, and keyhole slot the spout mounting holes so that you could just clip it on or off as necessary... no need to undo nuts at all...

          Gday all,
Mal, Ive tried DSE, Jaycar, RS, Altronics and Oatley electronics (the weird stuff specialists),  all with no joy  .
Im still waiting to hear back from Blackwoods as well  :.
Robusto, Im not sure if this is something that Bunnings would stock, its seems a bit specialised for them. Our closest one is only small as well, so theyve got a smaller range, Ill give them a bell though.
Matt, I was going to use some 4mm threaded rod and cut it down to size, if only I could get hold of some nuts (no comments)  ;D.
Good suggestion about keyholing the snout, although I dont know if I can get hold of a spare snout, just in case I stuff the first one up  :-[.
Thanks for your help and suggestions, Ill let you know how I go.
          Steve

I wonder (aloud) if you could attach the snout using magnets. Maybe those thin self-adhesive ones, though weak, could be attached to the body or snout. Or stronger ones attached to the snout via the screws?

Magnets would be brilliant (assuming the housing is metal?). Get some rare earth ones from Jaycar.

on closer inspection (of the first pic) I dont think my keyhole slot idea would work as the snout has to fit over a protruding boss on the grinder...

This may seem obvious, but have you tried your corner hardware store? Most of the ones around here carry SS 4mm nuts and bolts of varying lengths. It will be a regular nut and not knurled but it will work all the same.

Javaphile, the corner hardware store here in the big cities went the way of the dodo, corner grocer and corner milkbar (drugstore?). We now have middle-sized stores, and huge, huge stores so big they even sell a cut lunch (and coffee) inside to give you enough sustenance to travel from one end to the other.

Well I must admit that the corner Ma & Pa hardware store that I used to love to waunder through is a thing of the distant past here as well. No more waundering the aisles gazing up at the mass of odds and ends hanging from the overhead that have accumulated over decades, among which you never knew what new treasure youd find covered in dust and waiting to be discovered. *sigh*

Theyve all been displaced by the big chain hardware stores which are on every other corner. While theyre all shiney and sparkly with none of the piles of things to browse through, they do have an amazing selection of nuts and bolts. I was able to get all the different screws, nuts, and bolts I needed for my Gothot rebuild, which were all metric, in Stainless Steel with hex (allen wrench) heads even at the local Ace (which used to be one of those Ma & Pa stores). Their only downfall in my case was not having a large enough quantity on hand of a few of the bolts I needed which required a trip to the next store up the line.

If you need a nut and bolt giveem a shot. You might be pleasantly surprised.

                      Hmmm,

Come to think of it.... a couple of years ago I needed a range of odd sized s/s screws, studs and nuts, etc and found them in our local Repco Store..... it was the last shop I went to and they ended up having everything I needed . Might be worth a try ,

                      Mal.

Dont think that you would find much in the way of 18-8 Stainless at Bunnings/ Blackwoods are to expensive and probably only sell 100 Packs, A Bolt and Nuttery is the way to go, We have one here in Coffs, Eastland Trade Supplies, I can Ask them but not till wednesday as Im off to the Gold Coast with my Mother and (Aunt from the USA)..
Im held in High regard by the staff as I asked for a Metric Bolt, He gave me an Imperial one and I took it back telling him while it fitted the Pitch was wrong 55 vs 60 Degrees and it did not fit well..
Mate didnt want to cut one for me as he has an old Pommy Lathe and Metric is a Pain to cut on Imperial gear..

                          Gday all,
just a quick update on my search for nuts, and to thank everybody for their help and suggestions.
Repco has never heard of them.
                          Bunnings, same as Repco.
The local engineers supplies suggested the local boat supplies shop as they stock stainless stuff.
Local boat supplies shop, no good, at least he knew what I was talking about though.
Still waiting on a reply from Blackwoods. Ill give them a ring, although Im not holding my breath as they dont have them on their website.
Ive sent off an email to Coventry Group Ltd, who are apparently a huge supplier and have everything (so their website says). Ill have to wait until after Easter for a reply though.
Thanks for you kind offer to check your local nuttery Tepin, its much appreciated.
I hope everybody has a nice relaxing Easter and that the bunny is good to you all.

                            Hey Lovey,

If you cant source what you need in Oz I can always order the parts from McMaster-Carr to be shipped to me and then send them on too you.

Perhaps theres others whod like to get in on this as well and we could do a larger order to spread the postage cost around.

Have you looked at places like RS components etc? They might stock similar stuff.
