Yes I have a Hario and can highly recommend it. The grind is very consistent and has very little fines - whether that is a good or bad thing Ill leave to the old smokeys to argue - but the benefit with my Presso is that it doesnt get choked. Theres also minimal wastage - nothing gets left in the grinder.
I hear the Kyoceras are very good too.
Cheers

Re: Conical - hand grinders vs the big boys
Bassway, thanks for the offer, but Ill have to decline, lol. Yeah it was indeed a steal and I cherish it every day. Went through alot of trouble to find the perfect hand mill for it too. Ended up buying a 50+ year old KyM Turkish style mill so I have a full hands-on experience.
I once thought electric grinders ruled, but there are alot of very capable hand mills out there. Of course not all are created equal, but when you find a good one its a keeper for life. Later!

Re: Conical - hand grinders vs the big boys
lol @ $5 Robur, I really hope it would be in mint conditionAt $3 you got an absolute steal. That is like buying a 2nd hand Zass for $0.12 or a 2nd hand Robur for $5.

Re: Conical - hand grinders vs the big boys
You want to sell your Cremina for ten times the price ($30) to me? :Originally posted by 2E353C39322A6A69685D0 link=1274445857/9#9 date=1275240953Money has little to do with it. For example, I own a 1977 Olympia Cremina that was purchased for $3 and it is easily on par with my 2 group NS Aurelia. Of course not in terms of output volume, but shot quality and consistency it is easily the equal of the Aurelia.
The current Cremina sells for $3000.
A good second hand sells for over $1000 on Ebay.

So, say a Kyocera grinder vs a Mazzer Robur, for example?
The better hand grinders are definitely on par with prosumer/commercial grinders. Anybody ever read through the Titan shootout on Home-Barista?
In fact, for our commercial setup I have a prototype hand mill in mind to replace all electric grinders. Later!

Re: Conical - hand grinders vs the big boys
Speed wise there is no comparison.
Tastes wise though is another thing all together. With a hand conical grinder will introduce less heat then the electronic grinder. If you get the settings right and have a high quality hand grinder "taste" wise it can battle with the big boys. It may even taster better, due to less heat going into the grinds..
A blind test would be great to do as a comparison.

Re: Conical - hand grinders vs the big boys
Different animals Robur to Kyocera/Hario etc.
Unless you get somewhere around a Rocky or better then the hand grinders stack up very well in grind quality for espresso. They are certainly better than appliance types (450/480 etc). Much above that you would be pushed to compare them unless you were to do some blind cuppings and side by side testing. Based on what grinders I have had or have the Ascaso, Ibiteral and 480 all are behind, the DRMs are better by a bit.
Thar said I use mine partly for the silence and it is part of the routine

Re: Conical - hand grinders vs the big boys
If these two were comparable, id be fitting a low speed k-mart drill to a kyocera and double sided taping a Mazzer badge on it for $150....home-made Robur!!!!

1: quality of out put
2: reproducibility
3: level of Fineness
4: Through put / hr
5: Life expectancy
6: cost
7: size
You can compare any thing ya want.. The question is WHY or what is the intended outcome of such a comparison.
Mini Minor Vs BMP
1: War zone OR
2: Peak hr traffic
