  • Rocky is Locky?

Hi all.. Just posting up a strange, by all accounts, issue with a new Rocky No Doser. Two days old.

I ran through some grinds to find what would work in one of my machines and after having some success decided to look into the beast and check the true zero. Around 10 for my small home machine btw.

I removed the hopper and easly moved the upper burr carrier clockwise until the burrs touched (machine off and gently turning the motor by the middle nut). I noticed in this process the carrier being harder to turn? So much so that I re-installed the hopper to aid in the rotation.

Now I am in the position where I am stuck at 20 with no chance of turning the hopper. This is with the unit between my legs and both hands gripping the hopper sitting on the floor!!!

My thoughts are that with problems of the slop requiring the use of teflon tape to hold the upper carrier firmly Rancilio has made the screw thread too tight. Some contaminent (coffee or swarth) has now got in there and jammed the thread.

    My questions are;

Has any one else struck this problem?
Is my warranty voided by removing the hopper?

    Thanks for reading....

Suggest you take it back to the supplier and ask for help before you void your warranty, by the sound of things you also stand a pretty good chance of breaking something, the hopper is only plastic,

I have put it back into the box and will contact them tomorrow. Whilst completely frustrating I hope my mental image of wrestling the Rocky on the floor makes for some smiles. I am an ex-race motorcycle engineer so I went to the level just before the breaking of the hopper lol...

Given your background I would have thought a machine as basic as the Rocky would be a piece of cake.

Thanks for your thoughts... I know I should be all over this but whilst the Rocky is basic its country of origin makes for some issues..just ask Ducati owners. I have to love the bent screw as the factory zero adjustment...inspiring. Hang on the kettle has just boiled for my Nescafe instant....doohhh..

BENT SCREW ? nope its a straight screw, suspect you may have bent it when trying to strong arm the hopper.

Yep that crossed my mind as well but I only had movement between the 0 and 30 mark with the hopper attached so the screw was not touching between these points.

The movement became less to then settle on 20? Initally the hopper was able to be turned to -2 without force?

Mine had a bent screw as well when I had it. It all functioned ok though. I thought it was a factory zero point too. :-?

                    Re: Rocky is Locky?

For what its worth one of mine had a bent screw as well he other was straight.
I ended up replacing the bent screw and it seemed okay - but a bit closer to thru Zero! I tested it very carefully!!!

                      Hello OCWEB:
If it is one of my companys Rancilio imports (ie. equipment my company carries warranty for) you *probably* havent voided your warranty and that can be checked when the client caused problem is rectified for you.

However, as you would expect the client caused probem is a chargable repair.

Whilst some like to see if the zero on the dial is a "true" zero as in where the plates touch, it is actually irrelevant. The grinder setting for your beans & machine is wherever you find it no matter the number.

Re your comment ...problems of the slop requiring the use of teflon tape to hold the upper carrier firmly.......Please dont believe everything you read in cyberspace! There can be no "slop" while the equipment is operating under load, even if there was with grinder empty.

I suggest having the inconvenience rectified, and enjoying your grinder from the outside, rather than from the inside

                      Regardz,

I certainly hope this will be the case when I ring you this morning. Hopefully removing the hopper and rotating the carrier through 30 degrees wont qualify as "client caused".

Note to all this is why I bought all my equipment so far ~$2300 from a local supplier vs eBay and the like.

The chain of command in properly servicing your needs starts by you contacting your retailer, & if he is unable to help he will direct the enquiry to the appropriate service agent in your area or importer.
