  • Rocky upgrade needed ???

    Hi everyone

This is my first topic I have started after looking at info on this site for the last few years. Thanks for all the great info!!.. I have a silvia with a pid  & rocky doserless. I am looking at upgrading to a h/x machine and was wanting to know what benifits are to be gained by upgrading rocky as well. If rocky is up to the job I can invest more money in the  machine. Would appreciate any advice or opinions.
    Thanks

The rocky will be up to the task but you will need to master the process of grind and tamp

What HX machine are you looking at

      Thanks for your info KK.
I was at first looking at expobar minore 111 but I am now looking at Giotto Evoluzione with rotary pump & tank.

        For whatever machine you choose
        Always go for build quality
        That includes components and finish
It pays in the long run

Try the plastic tube and bean mod to make it stepless and infinitely adjustable (relatively speaking) before deciding whether to change grinders...

            Hi
            ozscott
I have done the plastic tube & bean mod already and it is a big improvment.

            cheers

This is some info I posted in another topic

            I have had the rocky for a few years now and have made some improvements over this time that include;

            1. plastic cup fitted to portafilter when grinding. Improvement =7/10
            2. teflon tape mod.  Improvement =7/10
            3. stepless mod.  Improvement =10/10
            4. click/clack lid mod. Improvement =4/10

The last thing I have done was to bend a 200mm long 10x1.5 piece of aluminium flat bar to fit in to the doser chute of rocky to remove all of the leftover grinds in the chute. It needs to be a 120mm straight for handle then bend up 40mm then bend straight 40mm. You will then need to remove the top burr so you can see where the grinds enter the chute. You will then need to file the end of the 40mm straight so that it can reach to the back of the chute .Size about 8mm. Make sure it does not enter into the grinding area. To use the tool use grinder as normal, when you finish grinding (make sure grinder stops) use tool to remove grinds left in chute then take out. Do a quick start of grinder(make sure grinder stops) then remove last bit of grinds.I found this tool very good to remove freshly ground coffee from the chute before it goes stale. This has stopped alot of channelling in the puck. Improvement =8/10.

            Cheers.

Is there a dless machine that doesnt have a small amount of leftover grind in its chute?

I too wonder if its worth sticking with the Rocky or going upwards.

                But what to buy? :-?

                      Re: Rocky upgrade needed ???

Im watching this thread with interest as Ive also got a Rocky and about to make the jump up to a Giotto Evoluzione.

Im still working on selling the advantages of the Evo over the PP to the missus (Im already convinced, but she doesnt necessarily share the same priorities).  If she even gets a hint that I may need to upgrade the grinder now, Im a dead man..!

I too have performed the stepless/teflon/plastic-cup mods.  Im positive that the Rocky can do the job at least for a while.  Im also certain that there will be significant improvements from the Giotto alone (moving up from Silvia), so that in itself will buy me some time.

If I can get a further 12 months out of Rocky, I should be in the clear for another upgrade

For me, I think the Versalab is going to be well out of my allowable budget.  Im thinking more K3 WBC or K6 manual at the moment, not sure I could even push my luck to a K6 WBC...  :-/

Though ask me again in 12 months and it may be a different story!

IMO hang on the rocky until you are able to make a real jump to a grinder that will be a great buddy to the Evo (-wow, I just had a bad thought !).

I waited and jumped over several upgrades and saved a packet.
                        Wont say any more

                          Hi Bruce

Your story sounds very much the same as mine. Not sure if your wife is into coffee but mine is not. When I started looking at upgrading silvia I went to Talk Coffee in melbourne with my wife to look at there machines thay had setup on the bench. The best part of this was my wife could hear how much quiter the Evo (rotary pump) was compared to the P/P (vibe pump). Very good selling point when the wife is watching TV & I am making coffee.
After decideing on the Evo I had to give up thinking about upgrading rocky for now. That was why I asked if rocky upgrade is needed ???

                          Cheers

                            Re: Rocky upgrade needed ???

Like I said, Im sold on the Evo. Wife gave the approval for the PP, even though it was slightly over budget.

Wife is a coffee drinker also. Weve also been doing house renovations which means the noise from the machine is now bellowing through the living area (which Im hoping will help my case).

Waiting on my generous tax return to be paid now... I think it will seal the deal. Im positive that going the Evo is a better choice as it virtually eliminates any possible traces of machine upgraditis, whereas if a went the PP thered always be that little niggling voice saying "what if...".

Id love to be able to demo the two side-by-side, but Im not sure I want to drive 14hrs to experience it...

Ill wait until Ive got the Evo (or even the PP, if it comes to it) before I decide how long I can live with Rocky...

Keep us posted on how you go.
