From my experience with my Sunbeam Grinder, it held back a lot of grinds in the chute.
I used to tap and slap it to get the grinds out.

Ditto - I did that too and upend it and bump its spout on the bench top, only to have it drop more grinds later when it gets the slightest nudge. ;D
All grinders do it to an extent..

Unless you have a air supply to push out all the grinds; then grinds must remain in the system.

Some use all sorts of tricks to make you think otherwise... But do not be confused...

Unless no beans in teh hopper and you have top sealing sweepers, you will always have something left in teh system... And some have doors at the top, thus the whole inner compartment is just grinds...

Re: Dosing from Sunbeam EM0480 and Rancilio Rocky

I am jumping into the forum after lurking and learning about the mystical, possible, elusive "godshot" and better coffee.
It kicked off seriously a few years back when a friend gave me a cappuccino made in the bush with an old Atomic stovetop - and then another...
My coffee improved (mega) soon after buying a Bellman stovestop with gauge. I have used the supermarket 250 brick - Lavazza, usually. It makes better flavoured coffee than many shops - I realise that is not saying much on this forum.
It should take another step when I have tamed the combo with the Sunbeam EM-0480 grinder. It took about an hour this arvo to produce drinkable coffee as the grinder somehow can be assembled incorrectly which makes too chunky a grind. Reassembling a few times I finally got fine enough grinds. I do not know what dose to use for a decent cup.
I find with the Bellman, (which has a 3/6 or 9 shot basket) it does not increase the volume of coffee proportionately for each selection, just the concentration of coffee .
I think the finer grounds, setting 10, have stonkered the little boilers ability to push much water through.
Plans in the pipeline are to get a Sunbeam EM5600 machine, Dremel the bottoms off the pressurised baskets and maybe "go naked".
I am using Gloria Jean beans to learn this with and hope to buy beans here so the freshness improves yet again.
By the way the coffee today was grrreat but too strong.
You CS ers have a lot to answer for
    Cheers
    Iain

Thanks Thundergod for the response. I think I finally figured out what I was doing wrong. It has to do with the way that the grinds exit the chute on both machines.

For some reason, the grinds from the Sunbeam fly out of the chute all fluffy and evenly distributed in the basket. Therefore, it usually takes just one knock on the table for the grinds to settle in nicely.

As for the Rocky, the grinds tend to be clumpy and poorly distributed as they enter the basket. Without realising, I would tend to knock the portafilter a couple of times, thinking that this would break the clumps. Inadvertantly, I ended up overdosing the without even realising.

So now, I make sure that I only knock the portafilter once to settle the grinds, and to ensure even distribution I employ the Weiss Distribution Technique. It has made my extractions really consistent!

Are you measuring the same amount of beans before starting to grind?
Have you compared the size of the ground coffee particles from both grinders?

Dosing from Sunbeam EM0480 and Rancilio Rocky

This might be a rather silly question but I remain quite perplexed as to what is going on...

I have a Sunbeam EM0480 and a Rancilio Rocky. When I grind beans on the EM0480 for a Rancilio Silvia double basket, I am usually able to get a pretty spot on dose by allowing the grinds to heap in the basket, knocking the portafilter once to allow the beans to settle, then using the flat edge of a spoon to push the excess grinds out such that the grounds sit flush with the top of the basket. After that, I apply about 30lbs of tamping pressure, and that usually packs the grinds down to the ridge line of the basket.

However, when using the same method of dosing (levelling off) and tamping (30lbs) on my newly acquired Rocky, I find that the packed grounds sit higher than the ridge line, which suggests to me that the dosing is too high. Why is this happening? What am I doing wrong? Really appreciate if someone could advise me. Sorry for being a total noob!
