  • Need help to find a grinder

    Hi everyone,

Im 23 and just bought my first entry level machine (saeco via venezia) and now want to buy a grinder. I dont want to spend more than around $200-250 and from what ive been reading i dont want a sunbeam 480 or a de longhi. I dont want to spend as high as the rancillo rocky so im looking at an Isomac proffassionale at around $280. I dont really want to spend that much either so if anyone could advise on a grinder around 200-250 it would be much appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Az

    Welcome to CS.

You leave me no choice but to recommend the Iberital Challenge. It will cost you well above the $300.00 I am afraid. It is a far better grinder than the one you mention and in my opinion, sometimes you have to extend yourself to get the best possible kit in the vicinity of your price bracket.

We can help you with that if you wish.

Otherwise, you may have to wait around until something suitable comes up second hand in the for sale section.

    Hope this helps.

Re: Need help to find a grinder

Thanks for the reply. I have looked at the Ibertal Challenge as well, pretty much looked at everything and have now just confused myself. The cheapest i have found the Iberital is at $298 is that the price you can sell it for?

      cheers

Re: Need help to find a grinder

Why are you discounting the Sunbeam? For the price its a good grinder, its just when compared to $600 grinders it isnt as good. But its like not buying a Rocky because an M4 is better, or not getting an M4 because a Kony-e is better etc.

When people say they arent great they generally mean compared to the grinders which cost twice as much. For the money its an excellent grinder.

          Read this: http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1194680556

          In sort...

1: Buy the best possible and you will have it for life...

          Con - Can be expensive.

2: Match ya grinder to you machine

Con - Upgrade path will cost you more

3: Push the boundaries and get mid range grinder.

Con - Sometimes hard to justify

PS. The EM0480 at about $200 and when on special $169 etc should not be dismissed...
          > Is it a K3T - NO
          > Is it more than capable of grinding for your Coffee machine - YES by far....

Disclaimer - In effect meets point two above - so you have to decide what you want in teh future...

          PPS.

          In order of preference.

          * Most basic of all Sunbeam EM0480 (~$200)

          * For home use with space issues = Eureka Mignon (~$450)

          * Next is a Macap Digital model (~$1150)

          * After that one of teh DITTING units (~$2600 plus)

But until lotto comes in.. I am stuck at point 2.

Do some reading and just be aware...

Settings do/can change with TIME and with the QUALITY of your beans...

IT is an entry level grinder - but at that $ you have a grinder that will allow you to get a good shot from your machine..

                BUT when upgradeitus kicks in...

A new higher end machine will require a JUMP in grinder Quality at some stage... If ya not too fussy then the EM0480 will see you off on a new machine, but its limitations will be in teh cup.

                PS. Enjoy the coffee road

Re: Need help to find a grinder

Just curious, to me there seems to be an anomoly in info thrown around that Id like to reconcile:

The Sunbeam 0480 is generally acknowledged as the minimum requirement for an entry point grinder.

The 0450 model, from what I understand, utilises the same internal workings, with main differences being external casing, on/on switch and longer warranty on the 0480.

With this in mind, wouldnt it be fair to expect similar grind results from each, and that being the case, wouldnt it also be fair to consider the 0450 as the true entry point (at around $120 if you shop around)?

                  Or, have I missed something?

                  Cheers,
                  Damien

                    No you havent missed anything.
                    What youve stated is correct.

Theres a price difference of about $50 and the difference is an additional auto position on the power switch, the metal casing and for some reason a longer warranty on the motor.
Ive never managed to confirm that the motor is better.

A lot of people throw around info when trying to help but dont always get it 100% right.
Ive owned a 0450 and deliberately didnt spend the extra.
I always mention that the 0450 is the entry point.

Thanks TG... and glad to hear I havent missed anything, especially since Ive got an 0450 on order to get me started off (well, I have previously been using a blade grinder, but we wont go there!)
