  • Iberital Challenge Auto vs Manual

Just a newbie question about why you would buy one over the other? Most ppl own the auto, right?

I have just purchased the doserless model of the Iberital grinder. Im very happy with it so far and has made a great impact on the quality of the coffee I can now produce. The doserless version means you only grind what you need.

The concensus from what I have gathered from other members on this site is if you are making only a few coffees at a time then the doserless model is the one to go for.

    Regards

      Hi there

Im just a rank newbie but I bought a doserless iberital a month ago and havent looked back. I feel a doser, if like me you are new to this, encourages you to stick to whatever quantity the doser is set to and it becomes "too hard" to change after a while, where not having a doser, you are encouraged to experiment with different quantities of grind to see the differences in taste, mouthfeel etc - whether this was done intentionally or, in my case discovered accidentally.

I am still in the wonderful discovery stage where I know nothing but the simple things I experience are just so good. My opinion may well be completely different to that of more experienced cs-ers : so be it!

      cheers

Re: Iberital Challenge Auto vs Manual

        Hi,

Well I gained this info from a professional espresso machine course I attended last week...

We used doser grinders (OK they were Mazzers not Iberital :) and we were told to grind through the doser...

Start the grinder and start dosing into the filter whilst grinding.....
When the filter is near full.... turn off the grinder.....
Tap the filter (always the same number of times ... say 2)
Dispense the remaining coffee from the doser into the filter...
Level off the grinds in the filter...

And tamp etc as per normal....

The dosing action helps distribute the grinds more uniformly..... no coffee is left in the doser.

If the cafe is really busy, you can use the doser for what it was designed for!

I use a doser model La Cimbali at home and following the above it works perfectly! ;D

Re: Iberital Challenge Auto vs Manual

Hey JavaB, what you just described is exactly what I do in the professional arena as well. I have to admit, that I self taught myself that one because I understood and knew about how quickly coffee can go stale.

I "grind through the doser" for most of the coffee I make.

Sometimes in the busy environment of the cafe I let the machine run a little so that I can continue to have coffee going into my portafillers without too much of a wait time but I make sure that I have a list of coffee to make before I do that. I really dont like leaving unused coffee in the doser for too long!

I also find its much better to be able to have some coffee in the doser when I am going fast and furious on the machine! And as there tends to be a bit of static build up, having a bit more coffee in the grinder stops this a from happening too much as well. The old Boema grinder does occasionally struggle to keep up with me!

Re: Iberital Challenge Auto vs Manual

            Hi scoota gal...

I used to do a timed grind (a bit more than I needed to fill the basket) and then dose, tap, finish the dose, level tamp etc.... (I never left any grounds in the doser as the La Cimbali doser sweeps really clean)

But dosing through seems to give a more even distribution - dont know why- but my shots seems just a little better using the grind through technique.

So for me and home use, this method has worked really well.

Ill still use the doser when I have a heap of friends over--- after all, unless they have gone to Epic, those in Perth wont have had coffee which will put mine to shame (well not by too much anyhow) ;D

Re: Iberital Challenge Auto vs Manual

The amount of coffee left in the chute in my Iberital doserless is small.... but what causes it to stay there is determined by several factors.

If the grind is far too fine, that would cause grounds to stay.
Humidity. The higher, the more likely.
Heat from the portafilter....on a cold, humid day, this causes moist air to condense on the plastic chute, which then traps the ground coffee.

Often, tapping wont dislodge it.  For that purpose, I have a paper clip bent into an "S" shape which reaches into the chute and releases the stubborn remnants.

The amount, as I say, is tiny...no great waste. But I want dont want it being pushed into the next dose hours later.

Ive read that having a doser helps with distribution - is that worth considering?

If you read my post (a few up in this thread) I mention that this is the case. This was told to me by a professional Barista trainer (doesnt mean it has to be correct of course )

But it does seem to break up the lumps and lessen static electricity problems..... however, as detailed above.... you must grind through the doser so you are not leaving stale grounds behind for the next dose. i.e. only use it as a doser if you are making cup after cup (like a cafe at peak hour)

I have just got my doserless challenge and have found it easy to get even distribution with it following 2mcms dosing advice. I am a complete novice and can now dose it okay. In saying that I havent used a doser model or seen one in action. But if I can do it than anyone can. Maybe it would depend on the amount of coffee you drink per day. Either way I am sure you will be happy with the challenge once you dial it in to suit your Silvia.

I use a doser Macap but grind for each cup.

Im a pretty good judge now of how many beans I need for my double LM basket.

                      I rarely grind too much.
Better to be a tad short and throw in a few more beans.

I find that I need to brush the grinds out of the shute into the doser before I dose.
Even then there are a few more in the grinder but a quick on/off of the power switch blows the last few bits through, a final brush of the shute and Im ready to dose.

On the occasions I know Ive misjudged with the beans and there are some left in the grinder, I do the quick on/off before I start my next grind and empty the grinder of those few grounds before I start grinding my full dose.
