  • Robert Timms Supermarket Coffee Grinder

I am now the proud owner of an old Robert Timms Supermarket coffee grinder. Its a little the worse for wear but, given that it probably dates back 20 - 30 years, I its done remarkably well - and it certainly does grind coffee.

I have to admit that, while I like a drop of the brew, Im no expert ... and thats what brings me here. The adjustable grinder is labelled Coarse, Medium, Fine, Ultra Fine and I really dont know what grind from this machine would go with what method of making coffee. I can say that the Ultra Fine isnt Turkish, for example, but it seems to have worked fine in my dripolator. I can grind a little on each level and photograph it, if that would help.

Also, does anyone know if these sorts of grinders can be adjusted so that they would be more in keeping with todays tastes?

    Welcome H.

Depends on the type and age of the grinder. Some very much older type supermarket grinders dont have proper grinding plates and will not grind anything useful for todays market. They had plates that kind of look like scarifiers and just break up the beans.

Some brand "medium" aged supermarket grinders have grinding plates that also are fairly crappy and when needing replacement can not be replaced with original type. Meaning you buy a kind of "upgrade" kit that allows the fitment of more modern profile grinding plates. Some grinders have already had the upgrade, others havent. You would never know without deliving into the thing.

Your grinder is *most probably* but not necessarily a Climax and my comments refer to them. Suggest you go straight to the source for further information (search Climax Coffee)

    Good luck,

      Hi Attilio

Thanks for the response. Ill see what I can find out about Climax grinders (now THATS going to be a fun search!)

If it doesnt appeal to my customers, though, thats okay too - it was really bought for me and my partner because were down to only bags of the whole beans. Being a wholefood shop, we dont really sell a lot of coffee! People are all on a caffeine free kick *sigh*.

Have a read here and see if you regognise it http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1092699175 or narrow down what it is.

I have tried my Climax for Espresso and it is ordinary compared to other grinders I own, so I only use it for bags of Plunger/Drip grind which it does fairly well and is nice and quick for small lots.

If you have a good read around the site you will get the idea that coffee also is a fresh food and should be treated as such. Roasted Beans much over a month old are getting flat and lifeless generally and go rancid like roasted nuts over longer times. So ignoring the caffiene thing buy and sell them fresh or if your demand is really low then let them go I reckon
