Greetings,
I have a Silvia, and I need a new grinder.
Today I discovered 100% for sure that my grinder no longer cuts it. I also have discovered that my machine likes it a little finer than other Silvias (grabbed some pre-ground to take home and use immediately to prove current grinder faulty). Unfortunately the beautifully even grind was just a tad too course and under-extracted massively.
I then whipped out the hand grinder (Zass) and tried a few beans until I got one that came out fairly even and was able to pull some decent shots (dark crema, 50-60mL in 25-30 seconds). This makes me think that the machine is happy and just wants a nice grind.
Now my budget is currently very small. I am considering the BCG-800, Rocky (which is usually paired with the Silvia?) or even something a little more nicer (Mini Mazzer E).
I can afford a BCG-800 today, but am concerned that given the my Silvias proclivity for the finer grinds, the finer, even grinds and some comments on the BCG thread that things may end in tears if I head this way.
The rocky is about 6-8 weeks out affordability wise if I skip a few lunches at work
, my concern with this is that at some point I wont be happy with it I figure the amount of coffee we grind would be 13-26kg a year now this should mean it will last 3-10 years of super happy grinding. However Id ideally like to move on up to a HX or twin boiler machine in 3-5 years and am not sure if such a grinder will be sufficient to make good grinds for such a machine.
Something like a Mazzer Mini E (750-950) seems like it would be great for any machine, Silvia, HX, TwinBoiler, AeroPress, Dripper, but the price means Id be stuck with the Zass for far too long risking too much indecent coffee.
Ive looked at the FS thread, and well at present there is not anything in my price range, so may as well head for something new. Any comments, advice or thoughts are most welcome.
Apologies if the above reads as a rant, but I can be a slow learner, I think I was hanging on to the hope the Zass was good enough for too long because it was a gift from the Mrs and didnt want to risk upsetting her. :-[ Funny thing, after seeing me behind the machine like a madman pulling shots for the last hour or so, she asked what was up and is happy enough to have me replace it, the caffeine buzz is rather intense
