    Re: noisy sunbeam!

When I went shopping for a quieter grinder than my Lux I took a decibel meter and had the nice girl at Merlos line em up and fire em up! She thought I was insane but the upshot was that the Rocky I have now was quieter than the GranMacinino, my old lux, a 6month old Mazzer and my 12 month old F5. In short, go shopping with a DB meter and you will find a quieter model than the ear shatteringly aweful Sunbeam... Didnt dar take the meter within 50m of one of those

You need to do this with the Grinder actually grinding some beans though (which you may have done). Ive come across the occasional grinder that is silent with the motor running, add some beans and then watch out....

Interesting Mitto68, I have my first (second hand) grinder, a Sunbeam 480 and it is very noisy grinding and I didnt realise how messy- seems like the ground coffee is static and sticks to everything!

So my dream Rancilio should be better, nice when I can afford it!

Just remember as Mal has said and I initially omitted, fire the grinders up with beans (from the same roast) in them. I found it quite amazing that the much maligned Rocky won this particular albeit limited scope shoot-out. That was largely the reason I bought it... and because they said that if I didnt like it after a week they would refund me in full. Now off to some sponsors! Good luck,BH

              Re: noisy sunbeam!

I reckon the Rocky is a pretty decent grinder, all things considered. With very little effort and the application of a couple of very simple mods it is capable of producing output on a par with any decent planar burr grinder.

If you do a quick search (or a normal search), you should find the threads with the most successful mods that CSers have found to work the best, and also how to apply them.

              All the best
              Mal.
