  • Grinder update help

Had my mini mazzer for a while now (not in terms of grinding amount though) but thought time for a change. I dont really want my coffee shooting to the left and missing my basket, and putting little mods to clean the coffee grinds as I sweep. These are the quirks I lived with but time for a change I think..... was looking at options going forward - what are my next options doserless/doser. Size well compact would be great but I need to justify the move from my mazzer so open here.. Any thoughts ?? Is it worth moving ? Home use really, home roast fresh coffee all the time... ;D

Huge number of options available but without a budget and most likely being your last grinder upgrade (famous last words) best thing to do will be to get along to some businesses and have a play in the flesh.

Couple of things to consider in my book on the bigger grinders you are potentially looking at. Grind retention as a home user, my DRM/Cimbalis for example are about 2 grams and the doser drops well, my new K10 retains HEAPS in stock form (to be modded) and the stock doser is fantastic. Some of the E types vary quite a lot in dose quantity especially with small lots of beans in the hopper so you may finish up with a very expensive manual doserless in effect.

So how long is that bit of string?

This took me to a Mazzer Kony E from Chris at Talk Coffee.
Steep learning curve but have it under control and am happy with the purchase.

Perhaps well bump into each other again soon scollops,
or PM me if you want to come for look ;D

Glad youre happy with it Ronin,

Im curious to play with the M7D when it arrives, but love my Kony-E. I cant see it being displaced at this stage.

            Ditto for me.... 8-)

I have to say though, reliable repeatable dosing has never been an issue with the Kony-E and it is a very clean machine to use too - Little to no stray grinds whizzing about the place. If you are going to be serving up a bunch of espresso based drinks; with an adequate volume of coffee in the hopper (doesnt have to be all that much either) it will churn out dose after dose after dose at +/- 0.3g all day long.

Its also superbly quiet while grinding and very quick. Typically takes ~9.0 seconds for an 18-20g Double here at home. The Macap M4D Chris referred to above is also very quick and quiet and performs at around the same benchmark as the Kony-E. The only difference is the Burr Type and theres lots of discussion to be found on the boards re: the pros and cons of either type. Mainly comes down to personal preference in a home situation.

As with all machinery in this category, its always a great idea to try and arrange some hands-on use if possible, as mentioned above. Only by testing the pros and cons for yourself will you end up with something that ticks most of the criteria.

            Have fun ticking the boxes...

            Mal.

Cheers Guys looking at the Kony-e, although seen a few Konyss around the shops and a few other rather expensive ones....will give chris a pm also. Given its home use should settle in nicely for easy life, until next time.... ;D
