Re: Rocky hiccup
Thanks for the feedback guys. Maybe Im reinventing the wheel here, but Im going to try to cutout a winged-shaped washer that sits under the screws and folds back to more-or-less cover the screw recess. I think a very thick alfoil should do the trick. When in place, the alfoil should create a more uniform slide down the shute and prevent any stray beans from hanging back to avoid their grissly fate. Will report on mission outcomes.

Re: Rocky hiccup
Back in my Rocky days I stuffed a cut down foam ear plug into each hole, an option if earplugs are handy, new ones that isput Cig Filters into teh screw holes to cover the heads.

Re: Rocky hiccup
Richard I removed the bounce/finger guard from my Rocky shortly after buying it 10 years ago, made a huge difference as far as hang ups were concerned.Originally posted by 465D575C5546505558555655340 link=1298442869/3#3 date=1298590718Thanks Sitara; I have removed the spreader and it looks very unlikely that the beans will jam again, especially with on demand bean quantaties. However, there are now three screw recesses, each of which are big enough to trap 1-2 beans which will need to be either brushed into the shute or left as stale beans for the next grind. I cant believe something so simple could escape the Rocky designers. Ill need to make up a washer that folds back to block the recess. I wonder if anyone else has modded their Rocky for this purpose?
I still had the occasional one but only with larger than average or dark roasted or oily beans.
I owned the machine for another 9 years (used it daily) and could count the hang ups on the fingers of one hand.

Extend the legs as per teh post above by 5 or 8mm (screws are 3 or 4 ba if I remember correctly, add in some magnetic tape to teh underside of the Guard (catch metal things) and put Cig Filters into teh screw holes to cover the heads.Originally posted by 5A414B40495A4C4944494A49280 link=1298442869/3#3 date=1298590718I wonder if anyone else has modded their Rocky for this purpose?
Still safe for most, allows you to tickle the beans if needed (WHS) and keeps teh screw holes clean...

Re: Rocky hiccup
Do a search and you will see this posted previously my be in another rocky thread.
Takes 10 min and $5 to mod to allow hight to be increased and to keep teh screw holes clean of bean bits.
3 screws, a stanly knife, a piece of sprinkler rising (bunnings) and 6 cig filters.

Re: Rocky hiccup
Hi Richard
I removed the black plastic spreader finger guard and have not had any blockages since, although I did not remove it for this reason.
As you say it should be there for safety reasons especially if there are young children around.
I too dose on demand and can now nock off the few beans that remain sitting in top of the fixed grinding burr at the en of the grind. Also makes removing the burr carrier for cleaning easier as I dont have to dig out the few beans that are trapped in its screw holes!

Rocky hiccup
Apparently one of Rockys peculiarities is that the beans can sometimes lay in a certain way to cause a gridlock so that the beans dont drop into the grinders and you have to shake it up baby to loosen the gridlock. This happened when my Rocky was shown to me for the first time by Jetblack Expresso and has happened a couple more times in the month Ive had it. Not a biggie you might say, but annoying nonetheless. Looking down the chute the design culprit appears to be the plastic spreader thing. I presume its there for safety reasons, but am guessing that if it were not there the beans would gravitate down without problems. The spreader can also trap a few beans in its screwholes. I only grind on demand so not much is loaded into the hopper. Question for the techno gurus: can this plastic part be removed? Has anyone done it? does it fix the jamming issue?Tags: None
