mortar and pestle them before you grind em

or in a thick plastic bag and a rolling pin etc

just to smash em a bit so they fit ?

Thanks Greg - I managed to remove the hopper quite easily, and looking at the way the beans sit, it definitely seems to be a combination of the size and orientation of the bean. Given that the beans have only just been used, I cant see how the oils would come into affect just yet.

I cant see any easy solution to using a darker roast except for maybe sorting the beans before putting in the hopper so that any larger ones are discarded, or maybe modifying the hopper arrangement so that the beans can be easily jiggled until they enter the burrs correctly :-/

In general dark beans are larger (beans expand as they roast), and oilier.

The oil comes out of dark beans more as they age.

Oily beans do stick together more than dry ones.

Beans in the grinder are chaos, so sometimes they just manage to stack in a stuck configuration.

The sticking could be 4 things so far: dark, oily, old, chaos.

    Good luck.

    Greg

those beans could have jammed up the area around the burrs.

if nothing is coming out or getting into the burrs i would remove the hopper and the top burr to see whats in there... the oils could be gumming it up

do some research prior on the grinder of that machine or check the handbook for a diagram and instructions on how to pull it apart if it at looks "hard to do". a good way is to take photos of it when you are pulling it apart to reference how it goes back together

i have never pulled a lelit to bits (yet)

Lelit Combi - grinding w/dark roast

We recently purchased a Lelit Combi (with built-in PL53 griner) and have been really happy with the quality of coffee that this machine produces, but have just experienced an issue with the grinder when we changed to a dark roast for the first time.

The first few grinds with the new bean went ok, but then the beans were no longer getting ground, even though you could hear the motor whirring away. At closer inspection, and after removing the hopper, it seems as though the beans are getting stuck in the mouth of the grinder, and are too large to reach the burrs.

I had read elsewhere that dark roasted beans are generally larger in size, but was wondering if this is the primary cause? I also know that the dark roast will be oilier, but we had really only just started using this bean.

Is there anything else that I should be considering as a possible cause?
