hi all,
I was lucky enough to pickup an old La Cimbalia cadet today for free!
I had done some work on a couple of grinders for an old employer and they were going to throw it out!
I found that from constant misuse and lack of cleaning the burrs had seized. After taking it apart it seems someone had set the burrs too close together or something of the like as there were large chunks of metal jamming the blades.
After removing and cleaning the burrs, im now having trouble winding the upper bur carrier back in. Ive had some solid winding in the past, but am at the point where i need some padded grips to turn the carrier past a certain point.
Its not cross threaded, however on closer inspection there appears to be a few fine nicks on the brass threads and some impacted grounds here and there. I know the previous owner had replaced the burrs themselves at one point, so may have dropped or damaged the carrier slightly then.
Ultimately, i can get the carrier in and dial in the machine for espresso, which is fine. The cadet has such fine tuning that once its set to espresso grind it would take me 5 mins of winding to coarsen it anyways!
However it would be nice, just for my perfectionist temperment to have the carrier wind down smoothly.
Any suggestions on methods to repair/make it a cleaner wind of the top carrier?
Also, the knob/dial for grind adjustment has been lost along the way. Any crafty ideas for an easy replacement?
oh and lastly, (sorry long winded i know) i had to wash the burrs in warm water and detergent to remove all the accumulation. Is it neccesary to season the burrs before re-installing? or will constant use prevent any rust building from exposure to the water?
Cheers
