Thanks, will do the same, here is a pic showing how much the chamber rim extends above the shute at the moment.

While I am on it has anyone removed the dosing chamber and replaced with a catch cone for grind on demand? I found a picture of one on the web done with a 1.25 litre soft drink bottle cut down and inverted but would like to do it with alloy or stainless for something that looks a little more classy.

I removed the last bit of metal on my RR45 chute and delivery into chamber is cleaner with much less retention. Has not affected the operation of this great grinder

Just bought a CC45 for a great price and stripped out burr carrier and doser chamber to clean it and it has come up a treat. Lots of caked on oils but other than that it is in great condition. Also removed the front mount tamper while I was at it.

One thing I noticed during reassembly though is the doser chamber covers about 3mm of the discharge shoot from the grinding chamber causing grinds to get caught. Has anyone else found this? I am considering filing out the dosing chamber to match the discharge shoot properly. Can anyone forsee a problem with doing this?

Im looking at an RR45 in similar condition to this... would this be a step up in grind quality from a smart grinder? (Im guessing yes...) What is it on par with?
Yes definitely a step up in my opinion, as someone who owns both.

Keep in mind there is an enormous size difference. If you like I can take a photo tonight of the SG next to a RR45 to give some perspective.

I know .. i thought the same thing. ... Right up till i tried to brush it away. Some of it brushed ok. What is seen is sticky and tar like.
    Ah, not so easy then....

Probably worth doing a complete strip down, clean and reassembly then mate.

Might even be worth thinking about replacing the motor bearings too while youre at it, with this degree of disassembly - Theyre cheap enough (less than $10 from a Bearing Supplies outfit), not too difficult a job, and definitely worth it in the long run. The burr-plate(s) (I can only see one ) look to be in decent shape so worth hanging on to I reckon.

At least youll know your new grinder inside and out by the time youre finished..... :P

Is it worth removing the top nut to get the brass bit out and clean in there or just clean and brush as much as i can without removing ? (Pic 1)
From your photo, the material looks to be quite loose so can probably be cleaned out pretty thoroughly via the use of your vacuum cleaner and an artists brush or two.

If there are any manky or congealed oils/grounds underneath the slinger then yes, it might be worth a complete strip down and clean out.

I did end up removing the burr so i could really get to the sections needing lots of TLC.

looking great, and as mentioned, theres more to grinders than just Mazzer! solid, big burrs, low rpm, low noise

    thumbs up!

OK have some more pics to upload soon .. Just waiting for the cable.

Who would have known the top bit with the burr was solid brass. It has come up all shiney

Got the Doser off, Not cleaned it as yet. I think i can flush water through it there is not electrics. I was looking at making a spout from the top and not using the doser anyway, but nice to keep if i ever upgrade and wish to on sell / give away etc.

A lot of Elbow grease and some nice hot soapy water has done the trick. the dish detergent cut through the oil well and made it easy to remove.

I still have the section at the top of the motor that spits the crushed beans to the doser, to clean. It is all manky and caked on so needs a lot of elbow grease.  I guess this will take time and i cant really wash it with hot soapy water, its the top of the motor. ... or Can I ?   Kidding..

I have to ask though . What is the difference between grinders. Is it the consistancey of the grind etc.

I often think how much easier it would be to give it to a service guy and say please clean it. and give hime money. It was so mankey it would probably cost me $300 to clean.

( yes i know its not a Maz)
As Attilio has alluded to, Mazzers arent the only decent grinder on the Block. There are many excellent grinders from manufacturers who dont get mentioned here very often, and some of which that display better engineering and design too.

I currently own a Mazzer but have owned many other brands over the years that I would not hesitate to recommend....

This grinder is as good as many 64 mm cafe grinders and much better than some, for various reasons, and if you are using for home use only then I cant see why it shouldnt be a top grinder as long as the grinding plates are not worn out.

Yes you can pull the dispenser / doser apart to clean

Dont put anything in the dish washer....warm soapy water and soft cloths

I wouldnt remove the bottom grinding plate.....and I also wouldnt remove the top grinding plate from its carrier. Once the top carrier is in your hand complete with plate attached, that is all you need to clean (thoroughly of course).

Then clean both threads carefully, suck all out with a vacuum cleaner and whalla.

The biggest areas of concern (for cleaning) will be the hopper, the inlet throat in the top plate carrier, and the dispenser (doser).

You could keep going, but I doubt going any further will result in anything that you could actually ever detect in the cup. Its more a question of doing something about the horrible old off putting greasy smell that emanates from grinders that arent kept clean.

    Hi James,

    Here are some Photos.
    1. The unit
    2. Looking into the Burr Where the beans go.
    3. The dosing chamber
    4. The top Removed.

I was able to unscrew the top burr to get to the bottom burr.

I think you will agree it is a mess. and the bits of ground beans you see that you would think will just fall off with a little wind are set like tar. It is very sticky inside. Althought the Burrs look untouched. It is thik on the wall and in Photo 1 there are whole beans trapped under / in that section which is the top Burr section.

The Burr is held on with some screws and on the top there is 3 Allen screws.

I am thinking i can remove the Burr and the Allen Screws and it should allow me to clean in there.

The bottom burr seems a little tricky as it is the section directly connected to the motor. Should i just remove the burr plate?

Can i remove the doser and fuly clean it. the only electrical section is the lid.

Oh how easy it would be if you could just stick it in a dishwasher

I hope the end result is worth it
