First time writer on one of these forums. I have the opposite problem to everyone else, in order to get a grind that doesn't register beyond the gold gauge on my EM9010 I have to have the grinder set on 22. Is this normal? Or should the grind setting be down around 12-15. Any and every suggestion appreciated as I think I will be running out of settings soon

apparently the shims are 0.25mm each, just checked those 4 main body screws and gave them a slight tighen up (can come loose over time i suspect and affect the stack height). Actually comes out nicely on this setting (3) it's just when the beans get older I usually have to go finer. May order one anyway unless the local coffee shop has them, can't hurt.
On a side note wasn't sure if it were the beans or the milk making it taste crap, I've got some Aldi beans which are actually pretty decent (fairly fresh from Melb $13 for 1kg), on the Columbian ones. I thought I had some success with the Aldi Organic soy milk ($1.50) but seems to curdle these day. Grabbed some Bon soy and what do you know.. will be hard going back now. I used to get vitasoy but they are never on special anyomre.
Cheers,

Could be worth trialling. You could possibly try a single standard washer instead of the other shims. It might be 1mm thick total.

Hi guys,
Blasting an old thread. I'm still using the EM0480 grinder and finding I'm right down on 2-4 on the fine scale. I previously got the shim kit and have checked and there are currently 2 washers.
Is it worth adding another one to go finer? in theory this should make the setting more like 8-10 on the scale.. I may leave it I guess it just goes fine enough, depending on the beans.
Was wondering if bunnings have any the same that would work (doubt it), otherwise will order from ebay $3
Thanks!

My 480 has been too coarse since I bought it, several years ago, but reading this thread inspired me to try adjustment. I down loaded the instructions - for those who try adjustment without them, the vital bit is that the 10mm nut above the lower burr has a LEFT HAND thread - remove it CLOCKWISE. Once I had mine off I found it had three 0.25mm adjustment washers under the burr. I had nothing that fine, but I did have a 1.00mm washer, so I replaced the factory ones with that - equivalent to adding one more of the standard washers. The grind was still coarse, so I added one more. It's fine! Anyway, I guess what I'm saying is that it's worthwhile checking the current spacers before you order a kit.
Good luck, David.

I thought I was going crazy till I found this thread. I have my grinder on the finest setting and it just doesn't seem fine enough. Have just ordered a shim. Fingers crossed this works.

The first EM0480 I bought was described as having new burrs but grind was too coarse. When it was pushed into place with a click it then produced exactly the fine espresso grind required. The next one I tried this on took a lot of pushing, finally clicked loudly then came loose. I had pushed and broken off the two tiny titties that engage with the adjusting thread. One-all. I managed to lock the second one in one position only so it now produces a coarse-ish plunger grind. Recently I bought one that ground too coarse and decided to attempt to shim it. I found it already had 3 fine factory shims. I fitted a washer that still let the burr pick up the driving pin, left off the original shims and tested it. Finer but not fine enough. Added back one of the original shims and it is now perfect. At setting #8 it almost chokes my Silvia. At #10 the pour is gloopy and rich. Lovely. Now I have 2 factory shims for if and when.

Yes you might need another shim. Order two for sure, but I’m sure you’ll only need one. Either way make sure you only add one for starters and give that a go before deciding if you need to add the second one.Originally posted by flewis88 View PostRun it now, and on the finest setting its drinkable. Very blonde though for fresh beans. I'll order 2 shims and give that a crack. I'm concerned whether 6 shims is excessive though.

Thanks LeroyC! I think you're right. Noticed the upper burr was loose which would let it float. The alignment marker was worn off, but I worked out how to lock it in. Haven't tested since, but I'm confident we're on a winner!Originally posted by LeroyC View PostThe upper burr won’t have been seated properly in the burr holder. Have you tested it again since you reassembled it? Sometimes taking it apart and putting it back together correctly is all it takes.

I noticed you can lift the outer burr in like a carrier, is it possible to get it out of calibration enough that it'd grind so coarse?

Yeah I've done one or two 0440/0450s exactly the same way with the same results. They're identical to the 0480 internally.Originally posted by rawill View PostI guess the same modifications and comment apply to the EM 0440 as well.
Just bought one for my campervan. Grind is OK, but could be better.
Adjustment does not seem to make a huge difference.
I can see the burr moving a little.
Also posted this on another thread.

Will delete it.
