  • How much in the hopper?

I would guess that the amount of beans in the hopper makes a difference to the fineness of the grind.

    Is this correct?

If so ideally how many beans should be in the hopper?

    I have an EM0480

does the brand of grinder make much difference to this?

The same amount... each and every time... ideally

not correct. Just put as many beans in to suit however long youre willing to have them drying out and going stale in there (i do a days worth)

Actually Mischa, in this case it is you who is not correct. Sunbeam clearly states that keeping a consistent volume of beans in the hopper is crucial to there being a consistent weight load on the burr set, all of which is required for a consistent grind

Allowing a days worth to go stale at a time doesnt sound like the ideal solution... I think it might be better to only grind what you need and when you need it (ideally using the same bean volume/mass each time) and then emptying the hopper out after each use... yes.... it is more work.... but the result is greater consistency

This is exactly what was recommended at the Sunbeam course I did a couple of years ago.

Good question. I guess ideally you should use the above technique with any grinder; hoppers are not good places to store beans. My Gino Rossi, which is a full commercial grinder, has a long throat just above the burrs so I can load relatively small amounts of beans without the beans jumping around or popcorning as some call it.

Many folks with the full size Mazzers remove the hopper and leave the hopper collar in place and load that. I pull back the shutter, put one doubles worth in the throat, close the shutter and put the second doubles worth on top of that. Its not ideal because of popcorning, but it is better than stale coffee left in the hopper.

indeed. I have a Mazzer Mini, with the short hopper, and still often remove it entirely. I -ALWAYS- dose in to the grinder exactly the beans required for one shot, even when entertaining. Without the hopper fitted, I can dose the throat and I cover it over with an older tamper and grind away. The tamper keeps stray stuff from popping out, doesnt really pop much, but loose grinds find themselves around the place.

With the hopper on, I can dose the throat, close the latch, dose again, then, I can load an empty dbl basket with beans (ideal shot measurement of beans) and slide that in on the inside of the hopper. Effectively, I get three shots in there.

I grind up the first lot, brew, open the latch letting the 2nd load through for grinding, close the latch, release the pf basket (third shot), and grind that last. Does this make sense? Maybe I should do a short video? any excuse to brew up!

So I guess I can prepare three measurements/shots of whole beans with the hopper on.

Ive never made more than four or five coffees back to back, so this method works well. If Im super lazy, Ill still just measure the beans in to the grinder one-at-a-time, Im not in a rush.

You could say, with this method, the dosing chamber is pointless for anything other than agitating the grinds as they spit out into my pf basket. I dont have it dialed in for dosing (if I ever needed to serve up 10-20 cups, Id use it as intended, alas, Im not a cafe). Could have bought the mini-e, but kind of like the doser action, and the way it disturbs the grinds

I have a Sunbeam EM0480 at work. I NEVER leave beans in the hopper. At least not over night. I put maybe 1/3 in to the hopper, grind in to half a milk carton (2L plastic), and brew (for three or four people at a time), I grind on demand each time, in to the carton, and scoop the grinds in to the machine (shitty auto machine, but takes grinds, phew).

Ive experimented with various techniques and methods, thats what makes this coffee thing so great.

My method is simple, measured, fast enough for me, and the least messy.

Back on topic, a bit of load on the grinders blades/burrs could be good, debatable, Id say for consistency, sure. But if Im dosing my grinder the same way each time, isnt that somewhat consistent also?

I know with my Mazzer, when the grinds come out, they are the same regardless of how loaded up the hopper is. The sunbeam on the other hand will perform differently depending on how packed the hopper is.

my advice for someone with a sunbeam or similar burr grinder would be to load the hopper up with at least 1/4 beans, do your thing, then dump them back in your valve bag. Yeah, its extra work, but worth it.

              fun times!

James, have you ever thought that this may be just a tad on the obsessive behavioural side?

I am curious though - how many beans do you count? ;D

Thank goodness for that - I was really worried about you; one brew at a time is bad enough! ;D

Well have to come up with an exchange range chart for vaious beans:

Peaberry vs Arabicas of various screen sizes (especially for Maragogype) and Robustas as well
