  • Should I "upgrade" from Gaggia MDF to Breville Smart Grinder?

    Short Version:
Should I replace my Gaggia MDF with a Breville Smart Grinder (and shim kit)?

    Long Version:
I have been through these forums fairly extensively and see a lot of recommendations for the Smart Grinder and the general feeling that it is comparable or better than the Rocky.

Separately, the Rocky and the MDF appear to be on par with each other depending on whose review you read.

I have a 3 yo refurbished MDF that works just fine, and on grind setting 5 it can choke my Gaggia Classic so I am happy with how fine it can grind.

I almost always grind for espresso with milk.

The only thing I dislike about the MDF is it is quite noisy. I see the controlled dose of the Breville as a plus to make it easier for my wife to use.

    Appreciate your thoughts.

    Cheers.

I have and MDF and dont find it noisy compared to the Sunbeam 0450 I used to own.
    Its also less messy.

But noise is relative; my Macap whispers compared to the MDF.

The MDF is a good little grinder.
I havent seen the Smart Grinder yet so have no direct comparison.

I recommend you try one for yourself as only you can weigh up the pros and cons before deciding to spend your money.

      Hmmm.....

Probably more to do with the Flat versus Conical debate Id reckon. If youre a black coffee drinker you would probably prefer the new Breville but if milk coffees are your thing, you may not be able to pick up much of a difference to be honest... :-?

Only if you stand further away when using it.

Id be interested to see if Dennis is correct in his implication as quoted above. I took a decibel meter with me to Merlos in Brisbane and had the poor girl fire up all the grinders on the bench. The Rocky was the quietest (beat the Mini by 1db) so I bought it. If the Breville is as quiet as the Rocky then Kudos to the Breville design team. They are so inexpensive that I should sell the Rocky and grab one seeing they ate being raved about but Id hate to be disappointed so for the moment Ill stay married and stick with old faithful for my decaf! It is none thes less tempting... Where in Brisbane can I see one and have a play. Ill take the db meter also!

Brett, I would love you to do that and admittedly, have relied on my ears rather than a meter.

Surely theres a good guys stockist in Brissie?

Its not just about SPL alone though.... Just as important is the dominant fundamental frequency and related harmonics....

                    Mal.

Absolutely agree!  My wife is a Full Lyric Sop so I will have to ensure that any grinders resonant overtones give way to hers lest their be broken glass in the room and MY blood on the floor. I am also fully aware that these aesthetic desires are often Ill-conceived, inconsistent and temperamental... Not dissimilar Sopranos in general.

So I suppose you tried them side by side.

Lets face it - noise is only a problem if it is exceptionally loud. I cant recall how noisy my Rocky was but I can tell you the Breville is a whole lot quieter than my K3T and it almost matches it in the cup, which is more important than the noise factor in my book 8-)

Used the Rocky side by side with the em0480 and noticed a big difference with the noise.

Used the Breville side by side with the em0480 and didnt notice much difference.

Its not a problem for me, but jcrayon mentioned noise as an issue, I gave my opinion based on my experience, not detailed scientific analysis with db measuring equipment.

Im sorry if offended the Breville people with my presumtuous accusations.

I like the Breville grinder better, way better value then the Rocky IMO.
