@ jcrayon just wondering if you bought or have had a chance to compare the Smart grinder to the MDF (or anyone else with familiar with both grinders?
How does it compare?
Im going to replace my Gaggia Classic and Gaggia MDF with a Breville Double Boiler and Breville Smart Grinder package. Its a month away, but if I remember Ill try and post back here the comparitive noise difference.
Re: Should I "upgrade" from Gaggia MDF to Breville Smart Grinder?
Im just leaving gaggia MDF to K-10. Solid grinder and would advice to stay on if youre withmilk drinker as wont notice taste improvement which brings conical as sunbeam is.
Otherwise,Id reccomend Sunbeam. Even with Hario Skerton, manual conical I get deeper spectar of flavors than with MDF.

Lets face it - noise is only a problem if it is exceptionally loud. I cant recall how noisy my Rocky was but I can tell you the Breville is a whole lot quieter than my K3T and it almost matches it in the cup, which is more important than the noise factor in my book 8-)
Thank you thank you thank you.
youve given me confidence with my breville smart. wont be getting a K3T for my new machine then ;D

So I suppose you tried them side by side.
Used the Rocky side by side with the em0480 and noticed a big difference with the noise.
Used the Breville side by side with the em0480 and didnt notice much difference.
Its not a problem for me, but jcrayon mentioned noise as an issue, I gave my opinion based on my experience, not detailed scientific analysis with db measuring equipment.
Im sorry if offended the Breville people with my presumtuous accusations.
I like the Breville grinder better, way better value then the Rocky IMO.

Its not just about SPL alone though.... Just as important is the dominant fundamental frequency and related harmonics....
Mal.
Absolutely agree! My wife is a Full Lyric Sop so I will have to ensure that any grinders resonant overtones give way to hers lest their be broken glass in the room and MY blood on the floor. I am also fully aware that these aesthetic desires are often Ill-conceived, inconsistent and temperamental... Not dissimilar Sopranos in general.

The Rocky is not as loud as the Breville.
Only if you stand further away when using it.
Id be interested to see if Dennis is correct in his implication as quoted above. I took a decibel meter with me to Merlos in Brisbane and had the poor girl fire up all the grinders on the bench. The Rocky was the quietest (beat the Mini by 1db) so I bought it. If the Breville is as quiet as the Rocky then Kudos to the Breville design team. They are so inexpensive that I should sell the Rocky and grab one seeing they ate being raved about but Id hate to be disappointed so for the moment Ill stay married and stick with old faithful for my decaf! It is none thes less tempting... Where in Brisbane can I see one and have a play. Ill take the db meter also!
Brett, I would love you to do that and admittedly, have relied on my ears rather than a meter.
Surely theres a good guys stockist in Brissie?
