Re: Grinder for the new breville?
Gday Tonym,
my advice would be to get the best grinder you can afford, be it a Breville smart or a Compak K3, or some other grinder.
Try and have a play with a grinder before you buy one. You might find some differences between them that sway you, one way or another, in regards to usaability, noise, ergonomics, etc.
You can make a good coffee with a good grinder and ordinary machine, but not the other way around.
Hope this helps,
Steve

Re: Grinder for the new breville?
Hi Tony,
I agree with Lovey on this question.
Always buy the best you can afford when it comes to grinders as the result will be in the cup.
The Breville is the best grinder <$500 on the market in my opinion. The Compak is a category killer in the under $1000 price bracket and yes, you will notice the difference.

I have the K3T and have just acquired the Breville. Im waiting delivery of the shim set from Breville then I will be able to make some comparisons.Originally posted by 497C7176425E727B7B78781D0 link=1306229582/2#2 date=1306235099The Breville is the best grinder <$500 on the market in my opinion. We used an Alex Duetto at CafeBiz with a Mazzer and then later with the Breville. I maintain that the Breville is brilliant bang for buck and matches or betters the other small grinders. Nevertheless, the evidence of the superior Mazzer was in the cup.

Re: Grinder for the new breville?
If you can stretch to the Compak K3 Touch then go for it. You get great grind quality, the ability to make small adjustments reasonably precisely and the ability to make big adjustments fast. You also get a timed dose, but read on.Originally posted by 140F0E190D51600 link=1306229582/0#0 date=1306229582should I get the Breville smart grinder or the Compak K3 touch?
If your budget is about half that, then you should consider the Lelit PL043MM and Iberital Challenge as well as the Breville. Both of these have MicroMetric adjustment which enables more precise adjustment than the Breville and certainly better adjustment than the stepped grinders in the same price range.
However, the Brevilles timed dose will make life easier for those who cant or dont want to dose manually. But when the grind setting is adjusted, the dose will change so you may end up dosing manually more than you think. If its to be used as a do-it-all grinder the Breville will be faster to change grind ranges (say from espresso to plunger) than on a MicroMetric grinder.
So which ones best? There is clearly no debate - it is obviously ... the one that best meets your criteria!

Initial testing suports the conventional wisdom that the K3 will outperform the Breville Smart Grinder.
Dont get me wrong - the Breville is no slouch - it is convenient and easy to adjust, but it wont produce a God shot 8-)
The difference in the shot is that the K3 is able to tease the best out of the beans showing more complexity in the taste. The Breville tends towards a more basic taste.
Ill try it with different beans and see how that compares.

Re: Grinder for the new breville?
Just did some more shots playing with the grind and amount adjustment and I am pleasently surprised at the quality of the shots now
With some further tweaking I think I could live with the Breville.

Re: Grinder for the new breville?
You would think Breville would have fixed the shim issue on machines that were in stock either by retro fitting the shims or suppling a shim kit with the grinder when purchased and made changes to production of new grinders to rectify the problem altogether.

Re: Grinder for the new breville?
I think that is great in theory Tony, however the logistics of unboxing many (hundreds of?) grinders would be an absolute nightmare.Originally posted by 160D0C1B0F53620 link=1306229582/9#9 date=1306407365You would think Breville would have fixed the shim issue on machines that were in stock either by retro fitting the shims or suppling a shim kit with the grinder when purchased and made changes to production of new grinders to rectify the problem altogether.
As I understand, any owner who feels that shims are required has received them pretty much overnight and I think that is pretty good service.
Cheers
Chris
