  • New to the grinder world, is Aldi a dirty word ?

    Hi All

First post here so please be gentle with me !

I have done quite a bit of reading here and I am impressed with the mass of knowledge !

I have seen some strong recommendations here about getting a good grinder, especially if you are using a machine.

Currently I drink plunger and buy pre ground.

Probably not looking at getting a machine just yet but looking at grinding my own coffee instead of buying pre ground. Also looking at one of those stove top espresso machines.

For fear of getting shot, can anyone give me some advice about the following machine on special at Aldi currently ?

    http://www.aldi.com.au/au/html/offers/2827_18130.htm

On the box when I had a look on the weekend it lists it as a burr grinder.

For a machine like this am I better off saving my money and keep on buying pre ground or will this give me some improvement?

Also, would this be any good to use with a stove top espresso machines ? I haven’t seen much talk on if they are any good or not.

Any tips of advice would be mostly appreciated.

    Thanks

Never used one but at $29 bucks its cheap enough to try it

Having said that, it might be a good dry herb grinder

I went in to my local aldi last thurs, intending to buy one try it out and return if no good. There was one out of the box and I looked at the burrs. burrs look like they are pressed or cast metal rather than milled - edges are rounded rather than sharp.

I did consider later that this might be a painted on coating to protect them during time from factory to end user, but it didnt look like that.

If you do give it a try, you can always return it for refund. Do report back though, would like to know how it goes.

          Hi Who Me

I have never purchased anything electrical from Aldi, what are their returns policy like?

How long would I have to use it and test it and still be able to take it back ?

You got 60 days (I think), return undamaged, in original packaging for refund. Believe me, youll know by then whether it is any good

i think all the low end grinders whether , aldi, sunbeam , breville , gaggia , all use the small sintered metal burrs about 40mm in diameter. they very noisy (high speed motor) and messy (throw grinds everywhere and lot of static) to use, normally just grind into a box.

Try it and let us know how it is. It will be educational for you at least.

Looks slimier to other ones I have seen at Ikea, Big W etc..

or the traditional looking ones like you mentioned above

Re: New to the grinder world, is Aldi a dirty word ?

My experience is they produce quite drinkable coffee, even with pre ground. A lot of people like/use them. They do seem to burn the coffee a bit. It took me a long time to realise that.

Id suggest go for it at those prices. May not be worth putting top quality beans into it but its your palate so play around.

                      Great.

I will have a play around with the Aldi items and report back.

                      Cheers

Too broad a generalization Im afraid

I know the Sunbeam EM0480 and the Breville Smart are serious grinders with conical burrs.

Ive used both and can highly recommend the Breville

I am talking about their lowest models, I also have a Breville smart grinder and very happy with it.
I have used a small gaggia and a sunbeam grinder and both used same bur set.
my gaggia was old and worn, but sunbeam was new.

these were for work use and were spare.

Stove top yes as in briki & syphon but not machines under pressure

Hi Twich, Just brought one myself (Aldi) and Im drinking my first ground coffee from it as I write. Works fine, not loud or buzzy as suggested. I will have to work on how fine to grind the coffee but fresh coffee is certainly superior to the packaged coffee I usually use. For $30 bucks Im sure you will find it will do the job fine.
