Ascaso i mini is quite small.
I have one of them and dont think much of it for espresso. Clumpy noisy .....

The time of the rockys dominance in this price bracket has past I reckon. For small and lightweight the Breville would be a better option if you want to stay compact electric, currently some great deals going on them. Also with a little effort a good quality hand grinder is an option at wull under $100, Hario slim, kyocera are handled by several of the sponsors here.

I use the Breville Smart Grinder with my Silvia and I think it is a great value grinder. I had a Rocky and I would prefer the Breville. It is more user friendly, less clumping, less mess and grind quailty is as good or better IMO.

The Rocky does have excellent reputation for build quaility and reliablity and has good resale. It is Built like a tank and is pretty quiet. But I think the Breville is killer value at around $250.

There are a few other options at that price range, Lelit, Ibertial, Nemox, but I think the Smart Grinder is hard to beat.

    Hi GCM58,

The Rocky weighs a ton for a start, so wouldnt be my first choice for a travel grinder. Not sure about your budget there either ... unless you have a second hand one in mind.

As far as weight goes, you could consider the Lelit PL043MM. It is the smallest grinder I am aware of with MicroMetric stepless adjustment - which is great if you are using it primarily for espresso.

Most of the stepped grinders in this price range have some pretty big steps so setting them for espresso can be a bit of a compromise. Another one with MicroMetric adjustment is the Iberital Challenge, but thats bigger than the Lelit.

Best Small Grinder for under $400

I am looking for a small good quality grinder to pair with a Silvia that will be taken on holidays when my wife and I travel in our car and also in our caravan. Hence the need to be small. One option is the Rocky. I note with the Rocky there have been some comments about its grind adjustment steps not being fine enough and the doserless version is subject to clumping. Are there any better options out there? Would appreciate your advice.
