Re: Random spring from em0480
As posted in the EM0450 coarse grind thread (should be the same):
When you take these apart to clean them and then reassemble its easy to mess up steps 8 and 9 in the manual. When you put the adjustment collar back on it is important to line up the two markers, but then do nothing else. This is when you put the top burr in (also lining up those markers).
Then, and only then, you turn the adjustment collar clockwise.
Its very easy to mistakenly pop the adjustment collar on and instinctively turn it at this point (before you put the burr in), but if you do the top burr wont go in correctly. But (just to confuse you) the top burr will go in incorrectly (with the markers not lined up) and it will appear like its all good to go.
The easy way to test. If you can lift the top burr back out when you have the grinder adjusted right, you have installed it incorrectly. Go back and start again. Collar, burr, then turn collar.

Re: Random spring from em0480
There is one on the top burr carrier and one on the casing. Mine are missing and I found that if I drop the top burr in and press down on it while I turn the collar, all is fine.
Hope this helps...
G.

Re: Random spring from em0480
These markers...are they on the top burr somewhere?
As all I see is a white arrow on the back of the collar

Re: Random spring from em0480
you sure youve assembled it correctly?
You need to make sure the collar is turned all the way to the unlocked position. From here, you need to line up the white markers (depending on how old your grinder is, youll see either a line or an arrow) on the collar and the burr to make sure it fits perfectly.

Re: Random spring from em0480
Thanks pjchris, a google search last night turned up a service manual which pointed to same
The problem I have now is that no matter the setting, I cant get the grind fine enough, its fairly coarse and is no good. Ive had this problem before and never been able to figure it out how to fix it, it just fixes itself
Any thoughts?

Re: Random spring from em0480
Thats the spring assembly from the switch that disables the grinder when the hopper is off. Without it in the proper place (In the hole above the microswitch) the grinder wont run.
