Not a lot.  Its easy to access - just remove the bottom burr.

After removing the bottom burr, there is a plastic disc with "vanes" along the outside edge (and coffee grounds between these vanes). Is the exit hole directly below this plastic disc?

It appears to be. The brush fits up the exit chute nicely and between brushing and turning the unit upside down there is very little grinds left.

The manual recommends running for two seconds to exhaust stale grinds before grinding your dose.

I will have another look next time I clean it, but agree, seems to be not much left behind. Cant believe how clean the operation of this grinder is, and if any grinds do go stray, they all get caught in the tray which is also easily emptied.

One word of caution - if you remove the bottom burr just make sure you replace the spring washer when reassembling.  I somehow didnt notice I hadnt even replaced it and the nut worked loose during a grind  :-[

I know - maybe Im the loose nut  8-)

                      Re: Grindz for Smart Grinder?

Thanks for the tip. I have removed the nut several times now (shimming excercises) so the washer has stuck in my head. Its also mentioned in the shim install guide.

Also, I found was that sometimes shims get stuck inside the bottom burr recess when removing it, and you need to be careful as they can just come out anytime, so I am careful and tap down the burr to remove any washers as soon as I remove it and before I forget (and count them too) and they get lost.

Off topic, I notice you also have the K3T, how do they compare mess and taste wise?

                      Cheers

The exit chute is NOT under the star wheel, it is parallel to star wheel in the wall front right side, the star wheel flicks the coffee tangantically in the chute where it the hits the walls of the downward exit pipe.

this chute is approx 10 x5 x 5mm and square sided.

ahhh ok, makes sense. so any old grinder (running grinder till empty) would only be what is between the stars vanes and in the vertical chute?

The K3T ia a great grinder but it is not as easy to clean and is much harder to redial a set grind.

I believe - and this is purely subjective - the Breville gives a more predictable and consistent result.

I know I am getting better coffee since switching to the Smart grinder 8-)

                              Re: Grindz for Smart Grinder?

I just remembered that one of the benefits of Grindz is that it removes the oily build up from the burrs and the coffee path. Its not just the left over bits of beans that cause taste problems but the oil residue as well.

So I now conclude that the Breville will benefit from regular use of Grindz - unless someone convinces me otherwise :
