    Hi CK,

I doubt if there would be an after market, retro installable kit that you could just get someone to fit inside your grinder, there wouldnt be any room. Most after market devices such as this are intended to be installed between the power point and the appliance, in a piggy-back sort of configuration.

Perhaps you could take the grinder into a local licensed electrical appliance repair store and ask them to inspect the innards of the grinder and report back on the type of motor fitted. Once you know that, it would be possible to recommend a possible and suitable controller option. All the best,

    Mal.

Do you just take the EM0480 grinder into a shop and ask them to fit it?

    Gday all,

I found this little controller that may do the job from jaycar: http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=AA0346&CATID=&keywords=speed+co ntroller&SPECIAL=&form=KEYWORD&ProdCodeOnly=&Keywo rd1=&Keyword2=&pageNumber=&priceMin=&priceMax=&SUB CATID=
although again you may need a sparky to fit it.

    Good luck,
    Thomas
    Hi Thomas,

This controller is NOT suitable for Universal Motors, i.e. any mains powered electric motor that has a commutator and carbon brushes. Its really only suitable for the type of motor stated or resistive loads. So, you really need to determine the type of motor fitted to the Sunbeam Grinder before you commit to this particular controller. All the best,

    Mal.

    Gday Thomas,
that controller could be a bit small to control a popper as it has a continuous rating of 600W and peak of 1200W. It would depend on the duty rating of the controller of course, but I think that a popper would fry it.
It could possibly be uprated with some higher rated components, mainly the triac and heatsink, depending on the mounting and the configuration of the controller.
    All the best.

    Hi Guys,

This is the type of thing that Kman is referring to I think http://tinyurl.com/zvtad..... You can get the same sort of device from Jaycar et al, as well. There are also more basic kit versions of this type of controller too but you really need the assistance of a licensed sparky to check over and test the 240V side of things, otherwise it might turn into a death trap . This type of controller is really designed to work with Universal Electric Motors (motors that use carbon brushes and operate from your 240V mains). Since Kman has got his to work ok with his grinder, I guess its possible that the EMO480 uses a Universal Motor then.

Hi Javaphile many thanks for the link. I dont see the need for the chiminey whats its purpose? The beans in my demo sat still and only rotated as desired a good movement but hey the temp went off the clock 240 degrees C to be exact my roast took only 5 minutes so this one at 10 minutes was a real burn!!!! Hummm. Need to get a temp controller and then we will be in business. working on it this week.

    Re: EM0480 Mod

Hi Guys, Sorry about lack of phots but charger on the blink also. Now fixed so hopefully some power to shoot some photos for you.

The drill speed controller is a very early model and controls the EM480 like a charm. Now as to being the same as Andy CJs link Im not sure but at first clance I would say yes. It was a kit orginally and mine was built by a friend as in those days we didnt have variable speed drills. It is enclosed in a plastic box so tomorrow I shall remove the screws and take some photos for you.

Just as a side issue im think of getting it checked out and seeing if we can upgrade to a higher amp SCR. Now this mind of mine says why cannot we use this to control a popper? I am led to believe by my electronic friends that the current draw is too high and the speed control will burn out. Now as luck would have it I have a friend who is into electronics big time. In fact we are building CNC machines. His for printed circuit boards and mine to drive a big router (wood). Same principle just a different scale. Now I was taking to him re the popper and showed him a stripped down Brevile unit which is the same as the B & D and also the Aldi unit. I think Wollies also have a model which is a rebadged god knows what. Like I have said elsewhere the temperature runs at 240 degrees C cooks beans real fast smoking in no time.

So the thinking runs like this. If we take the fan out of the control circuit and appply the control across the element then we get a temp control which will be absolutely brilliant for a roaster. Like i have just said this is at the thinking stage and Im about to open up the can of worms.

Dont worry i shall reveal all once i know things are beneficial.

Then again whilst shopping in Target i spied this 120mm dia SS seive collander if you will. Now in a moment of pure brilliance i thought that if I attach a vacuum to the underside then once my beans have completed the roast i can tip them into the collander turn the vac on and stir and get rid of all the chaff etc.

Theres no getting away from the mess multi roasts leave behind with the Imex. So in another fit of brilliance i thought to change the collander for a 90 degree elbow and then place this near the Imex so that the discharge gets sucked away without going all over my verandah. I will need to watch the temp but then perhaps a pulse timer on the vac.

By the by If you havent seen Pirates of the Caribbean dont miss this on the big screen. Great entertainment and we went in style and used our Christmas present from the kids which was 2 Gold Pass tickets and then having capachinos served during the movie and not have to hit the pause button and get up and make them. Reclining in an armchair all the while. Its a great movie very entertaining and on the go from A to Z all 2.5 hours of it. Hence the coffees.

By the by the coffee virus is spreading fast you just need to visit a Hardly Normal store to see the extensive range of coffee equipment.
