So the better half got me a paper cup, and cut the bottom off it so it fits in the pf like a funnel and now I have no grinds outside of the pf on the counter top    (but also with my wega I got rid of the 2 metal rods so the funnel would fit underneath exit chute)
Yeah - maybe Im just over optimistic about the mess thing? Ive used the paper cup idea but hadnt thought of removing the metal bars. Doh!

Maybe you can get the funnel parts as spares?
I did a search on the net and didnt find any mention of it as a spare part but you never know so Ill do a bit more digging.

I find the K3T to be a bit on the messy side (or maybe Im just not very good at getting the coffee in the basket) and Ive always struggled to get a really consistent grind from it.
I cant comment about others, but Im consistently (daily) adjusting my grinders to get the best out of my beans due to age of beans, weather temp and water temp, tamp pressure and operator issues, and  I find thats part of the enjoyment of coffee..

As long as it tastes good, pour times and puck results dont mean much to me at home..

Maybe instead of a new grinder, get some naked pfs, maybe a new tamper and a $$$$ voucher for a years worth of fresh roasted beans from Andy at CS.... That might change your mind about the grinder

Off topic, heres my solution for a mess free day to a nice cup of coffee.
Have cut out the base of a KFC potato gravy container (well!! I was hungry at the time :) to the right diameter for the 58mm portafilter and placed the top part into it.

Grind, lightly tap on the two metal platform on the grinder.
Bring over to the knockbox, then remove the cup, tamp and there we have it.

Found that i only have to clean the area with a broad paint brush once a week for those few stray grinds that do escape when i do the light tamp, then the full tamp technique, which is separate from the grinder issue.

On topic, from what i read, theres not a huge jump in grind quality once youre at K3T quality.
The main reason why you would need to upgrade, is for speed.

If youre not in a huge hurry, then you should be more than happy with the K3.

Perhaps a naked portafilter with a triple basket or a FZ-RR700 Baby Roaster and change of burrs for your 50th?

I reckon I get better coffee from my Pharos than my Macap M4D...but I havent done double-blind testing.

I didnt go to an electric large conical because of both the price and the size.
