  • Which Rocky setting?

    Hi,

Wondering what setting to use on my Rocky for:

    A) La Pavoni Professional Lever

    B) Plunger coffee (for dinner party tonight)

Obviously the first point will need to be answered by other Rocky/La Pavoni owners, but the second is more general. Had a lot of fun experimenting all afternoon with the La Pavoni and the Rocky - I reckon about 6 is perfect.

Plunger coffee should be a bit more coarse?

Thanks, having a lot of fun with it!

P.S. Am I not supposed to store my coffee in the top section? I read a review that said only store a few days worth of beans in the top section. Do people on this forum store their beans in the top section, or only put the required amount in each morning?

    Re: Which Rocky setting?

    Andrew,

Most Rockys are different when it comes to their settings.
IE: The true zero point is rarely where 0 is on the dial. For instance, my true zero is about -5.

Also, the exact grind level will be unique to your circumstances. What bean, how old, ambient temp conditions etc.

Generally, I grind around the 4 mark (true 9) for espresso and around 20 (25) for plunger. You sound like you are in the ballpark on 6.

Next espresso grind, allow some to flush through the chute to clear out any coarse stuff.

As for storing, I only load what I am going to grind right then. I try not to store any in the hopper.

      Thanks a lot!

My Rocky actually meets at 0 - or at least that is where the burrs kiss together. Very happy with the grinder. Ive found that about 9 is actually the best place to be for the La Pavoni (on this Grinders house bean at least).

Going to Atomica very soon to try some really fresh coffee!

As for storage - thanks, I always though I could just store the beans in the grinder!

I found that for plunger the grind setting is about +20 or +22

          Re: Which Rocky setting?

Sorry that should have been +20-22 from the setting I use for Silvia.
As long as the plunger will go down without too much resistance, if its too hard to plunge, use a courser grind.

          Regards

            Re: Which Rocky setting?

Hmmm...Im unable to get a decent setting at all. It either doesnt come out at all, or comes out like dishwater. Mine doesnt let me go below zero, and 12 or 13 are the closest I get to anything. Ive already wasted half a kilo of coffee trying to get it right.

The Rocky was a recent spur-of-the-moment purchase off eBay. Id had enough with my Isomac being pox. I know I should have gone with one of the site sponsors, but as I said, this was a spur-of-the-moment thing.

It took me about that much to finally get things dialed in.  I presently use 13 but started around 8.  At eight or nine there was essentially no flow through the filter and at 14 it is too watery.  I tried one setting every other day or so with the first couple of days at 10.  The settings were driving me crazy since there was some residual grinds in the machine and they make a difference to things even when you change the dial.  That was why I finally slowed down adjusting over several days.  Still and all it seems like a nice grinder and it is quiet. Far better than the Virtuoso or the Capresso we used to have.

It seems whatever setting its on, the coffee always comes out watery...its just a case of how long (ie. does it come out immediately or does it take 10 seconds to come out).

One lesson Ive learnt out of this is to NOT buy from the cheapest place. I have a $400 white elephant on my benchtop which is doing a worse job of the Isomac with the stuffed blades.

What are you using for beans and for the espresso machine? This sounds like stale old beans or a problem with the espresso machine.

                    Re: Which Rocky setting?

Been using Rios East Timorese which had been fine in the old Isomac. Roasted on 18/7 and freshly opened packet. Switching to fresh packet of Mountain Top was a bit better, but still way off.

Machine problems (ECM Botticelli) - thats another story - Ive got a growing suspicion I was given the wrong portafilters when I bought my machine (nearly 2 yrs ago now) - the portafilter only slots in to about the 7:30 position (viewed from the top) and has a tendency to pop out if not held in place.

If this was a used machine it may have had replacement group head gaskets put in that are too thick. If theres no coffee in the portafilter does it lock on any farther around?

Same problem with empty portafilter. The machine was ex-demo. Even with the basket removed, it doesnt go around all the way (as far as it should).

This link should be http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1155520399 - strange but I cant edit my previous post!

To summarise, Rio looked at the machine and replaced the group gasket (0.5mm thinner) and voila - much better. Getting the grind and dose right, and thanks to a Pullman Tamper, getting fantastic coffees now!

FWIW, the Rocky is on 12 which is just right for 2-week old Rios Espresso blend with an overdosed double basket and very firm tamping.
