  • Any experience with a CROSS THREADED top burr carrier?

I have recently acquired an old Anfim grinder and when I tried to clean out the burrs and inspect them I found I could spin the top collar 180 degrees and no further.

I am wondering if it is cross threaded. The other possibility is that it has a lock pin?

Does anyone have any experience with a jammed top burr carrier? (Im worried if I force it if it will strip the thread. It will take a LOT of force!)

If it turns the 180 degrees relatively smoothly, its very unlikely that its cross threaded. Does it come to a hard stop or gradually get tighter? The thread may be damaged in one spot preventing it from unscrewing further, but 180 degrees of movement makes sense and should be the adjustment range of the burr carrier. Ill check an Anfim for a lock pin tomorrow.

It doesnt come to a hard stop. It turns easily. It then suddenly becomes very hard to turn though you can turn it for a further 45 degrees or so, and then it becomes impossible to move without a tool.

        Hi Faema,

Its extremely unlikely to be cross threaded.

Remove everything and clean everything up until all is absolutely spotless as it will probably be ground coffee which is causing your issues..

I have been using Mals tip of dry teflon bike chain lube on reassembly and give it my [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

        Good luck

        Chris

I would love to remove everything but therein lies the problem. It wont budge...

The amount of force required is so huge that it is unlikely to simply be ground coffee. Two men attempting to unscrew it cant budge it.

            A simple tool is needed
If you dont have one they are cheep to purchase

I recon an oil filter tool with a cloth to prevent scratching will do the job easily

Observing the photo on post 1
You can also screw 2 bolts in the top of the burr carrier and use a bar as a lever

Which way are you turning it?

Not too sure about your one, but my one needs to be turned clockwise (for removal of top burr)

Its off! After my last post I got frustrated and decided to just rig a lever as I had been tempted yesterday.

It was indeed coffee causing the issue as cjn suggested.

Ive never seen coffee like this... like tar and very difficult to remove. Ive begun getting it out of the thread with a bamboo skewer...

Theres a pic which explains better than words about "Why you should properly maintain your grinder"

When my son worked at OMaras he saw plenty of that.
